Millions of Hausa Language speakers in Nigeria, Niger, Chad, Cameroon, Ghana and other parts of the world will soon enjoy better quality radio signals from Radio Nigeria ’s Hausa Service based in Kaduna.

This is because arrangements have been concluded by the station’s owners, the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN), to install a Brand New 200KW Medium Wave transmitter at the JAJI Transmitting Station.

The transmitter, a grant from the Japanese Government will be both digital and analogue. When completed early in 2008, it will have the most powerful signal and farthest reach on the African Continent.

Signing the Exchange of Notes with the Japanese Ambassador in Radio House, FRCN’s Headquarters in Abuja recently, the Minister of Information and Communications, Mr. John ODEY, thanked the  Japanese Government for its kind gesture. The Japanese Ambassador, Mr. Akio TANAKA, said the grant valued at Six Hundred and Forty-Two Million Yen (Y642, 000,000.00), was given to further strengthen the friendly and cooperative relations between the two countries.

FRCN’s Director General, Mr. Ben Egbuna, said in a statement, that the collaboration with Japan through the Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA) would enable Radio Nigeria boost its Hausa and Educational Services in the face of competition from foreign broadcasters such as the BBC, VOA and China Hausa Services.

The FRCN is Nigeria’s Premier Radio Broadcaster. With Four National Stations and an Operations Centre on Short and Medium Wave Bands and Thirty-Two (32) FM Stations nationwide, plus the new Web broadcast, it is Africa’s Largest Radio Network. Its Network signals, including those of its State stations which broadcast in both English and 15 local languages, are estimated to reach 120 million listeners daily.
