Inter Religious Council calls on Govt to build platform for good governance
Nigeria Inter Religious Council has called on the government and groups, particularly faith based organisations to build a systematic platform for peace and religious
harmony in the country through the promotion of socio-economic justice, transparency and good governance.
The call is contained in a Communiqué issued at the end of the quarterly meeting of the Council in Maiduguri.
The communiqué, signed by the Co-Chairmen of the Council, the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Mohammad Sa’ad Abubakar, President General, Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs and Archbishop John Onaiyekan President Christian Association of Nigeria commends the efforts of the Government in addressing the looming food crisis.
It also calls for move long term measures such as irrigation fro an-all-year-round farming to increase local food production to ensure food security.
The communiqué further calls on religious leaders to educate their members on the tenets and injunctions of their religions, to limit the spread of HIV/AIDS.
The Council also expresses its resolve to send a Memorandum to the joint Constitution Review Committee set up.
It urges the government to accelerate the attainment of the Millennium Development goals for reducing maternal mortality and promoting child survival.
