Ash Wednesday: Today marks beginning of lent for Christians

all over the world. It is known as Ash Wednesday.

In many Churches, Special Services will be held during which worshippers will be marked with ashes as a symbol of death, sorrow and sin.
This practice draws from ancient biblical traditions of covering one’s head with ashes, wearing sackcloth and fasting during critical moments.

The ashes used on this day are obtained from burnt palm fronds used on the Palm Sunday of the previous year.

Lenten Seanson is characterised by fasting, prayers and other sorts of penance.
It also marks the forty days and forty nights of fasting embarked on by Jesus Christ before his trials, death and resurrection.

Easter which is a celebration of the resurrection of Jesus Christ precedes Lent after days beginning from the Ash Wednesday.

Corps NSCDC Mohammed Lawal has advised seventy newly recruited officers to be diligent and law abiding.

He urged the officers at a passing out parade after an induction course in Owerri, to show respect and love to the public while carrying out their official assignments.

Lawal expressed happiness with the performance of the officers during the three-month training and urged them to cooperative with one another.

APRM: Thirty -man Team on Review of Nigeria

African Countries are in Nigeria to carry out validation exercise on governance.

The team is expected to focus on such areas as Democracy and Political Governance, Economic governance and Management, Corporate Governance and Socio- Economic Development.

Responding to questions from journalists shortly on arrival, the leader of the team, Ambassador Kiplagat Bethuel said Nigeria was the seventh country to be reviewed.

Correspondent reports that the essence of the exercise is to re-appraise and assess the level of socio-economic development in most of the African countries.

Meanwhile, President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua will formally launch the Nigeria’s Country Review Mission, CRM, of the African Peer Review Mechanism APRM on Tuesday at the State House Banquet Hall Abuja.

The Launching will be witnessed by representative of all stakeholders group in Nigeria.

Mark describes refusal to compensate oil spills victims as inhuman

as inhuman and unacceptable the refusal of Oil Companies to compensate victims of Oil spills.

Senator Mark stated this in response to complaints by the Akwa Ibom State Cooperative Fishery Association about the failure of Oil Company to pay compensation for farmlands and fish ponds destroyed in the area by Oil spills.

 The Senate President urged the affected people to remain law abiding and promised that the Senate would address the matter.

The leader of the Association, Elder Jeremiah Essien, said that Oil spills occurred in 1998, 2000, 2002 and 2003 at Eket, Ibeno, Ikot Abasi, Eastern Obolo, Nsit Eket, Oron Onna, and Itu Local Government Areas.

Senate President, David Mark said this when he received the National Executive Committee of the Magistrates Association of Nigeria, MAN, in Abuja that in recognition of the key role of the judiciary, the Senate would assist to improve their condition of service.

The Senate President urged the judicial officers to remove all bottlenecks militating against speedy delivery of justice.

The National President of the Association, Mrs Latifat Folarin appealed to the Senate to look into the disparity between the Magistrates and other judicial officers.

Recent report on measles, cholera gives Minister concern

and cholera in parts of the country is giving the Minister of Health, Professor Adenike Grange, serious concern.
Various state of the federation have reported the outbreak of their diseases in the last eight to twelve weeks.

In a statement in Abuja, relevant laboratories under the supervision of the Federal Ministry of Health and Works Health Organization have confirmed these diseases.

Meanwhile, a team of experts have been dispatched to the affected areas to determine the extent of the outbreak and initiate preventive and containment measures in the communities affected.

One of the affected areas, and where the Minister of Health, Professor Grange conducted on the sport assessment is, Zaria in Kaduna State.
Reports say most of the outbreaks are seen in areas where vaccination programmes were rejected.

Court adjourns case on attempted murder of DG NAFDAC          

of March to continue hearing in the case of attempted murder of the Director-General of NAFDAC, Professor Dora Akunyili.

Justice Ishaku Bello explained that he had an appeal before the Supreme Court to attend to.

At the resumed hearing, none of the eight accused persons were in Court.
Justice Bello warned that if they are still not present at the next sitting he would raise appeal for judgement.

Counsel to the 8th accused persons, Mr Max Ogar had during the session prayed the Court to hold that the Court of Appeal had jurisdiction to hear the matter.

The Appeal Court had directed the Abuja High Court which struck out the case saying it had no jurisdiction on the matter to hear it.

Lagos PDP protests removal of Williams as Chairman

led faction of the PDP in Lagos State on Monday staged a protest at the National Secretariat of the Party in Abuja calling for the removal of Chief Bayo Williams as the Chairman of the Party in the State.

The Assistant Publicity Secretary of the faction, Mr Sunday Olayifa in an interview said the only way to save PDP in Lagos from losing its members to other Parties was for the National Secretariat to constitute a Committee to look into the crisis.

Mr Olayifa said Chief Williams was imposed as the Lagos Chairman of the Party by the Party’s South-West Chairman, Chief Bode George and does not represent the interests of members in the State.

In a swift reaction, Chief Bode George said the group was only acting for those who do not have the interest of the Party at heart. Chief George said he was not the Chairman of the Party in the State and had no business in the running of its affairs.

FCT: Minister inaugurates 9member C’ttee on ship repairs

At the ceremony in Abuja, the Minster of State, Water Transportation, Prince John Okechukwu, said time had come for the implementation of the Coastal and inland Shipping Act popularly known as Cabotage regime.

Prince Okechukwu expressed the belief that this would go a long way in assisting Nigeria Shipping Companies to own, operate vessels and participate effectively in the nation’s Sea-born trade.

The Minister explained that in line with this, the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, NIMASA, had to create a fund for shipping development.
According to Prince Okechukwu, the Maritime sector had the potential of being the second highest foreign exchange earner for the country.

While speaking on behalf of his members, the Chairman of the Committee, who is also the Director-General of NIMASA, Dr. Ade Dosunmu, said one of the objectives of NIMASA was to assist local operators partake in cargo business which is presently dominated by foreign operators.

The terms of reference of the Committee included identifying conditions for accessing ship repairs and maintenance.

Supreme Court orders Iwu to answer questions at the Tribunal

of the Independent Electoral Commission, Professor Maurice Iwu should answer some fundamental questions pertaining to the last Presidential election at the Tribunal.

The Apex Court which granted in parts the first appeal of the Presidential candidate of the Action Congress, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, however turned down this request that the President Yar’Adua and Vice President Goodluck Jonathan be made to provide further information on the Election.

The Court held that this was not necessary as the Respondents did not conduct the election but were only candidates in the exercise.

Alhaji Atiku had appealed against the verdict of the Tribunal which ordered that it was not necessary to subject Professor Iwu to interrogation as that would further prolong the hearing of the matter.

The Supreme Court in the Judgement read by Justice Niki Tobi also turned down the second appeal by Alhaji Atiku and allowed two hundred and seventeen INEC witnesses to testify before the Tribunal.

In the judgement, the apex Court warned against situations where technicalities were made to override the interest of justice and fair hearing, stressing that the contest of speedy hearing should be in consonance with fair hearing.

Ondo Govt. approves 300m for Golf Course project                

Tourist Centre, the Ondo State Government has approved about three hundred million naira for the construction of a World Class Golf Course at Atosin-Idanre.

To this end, work on the project is expected to commence by March this year.
Governor Olusegun Agagu who announced this during an assessment of the proposed Golf Course Site said another sum of seventeen million naira had been set aside to compensate those whose landed property would be affected.

The Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Mr. Dele Osakuade had expressed the hope that the project would create employment opportunities for the people of the State.

Correspondent reports that the Golf Course project is part of efforts by the Government to ensure enlistment of Idanre Hills on the UNESCO World Heritage list.

Yar’adua supports removal of immunity clause from Constitution

A statement by the Special Adviser to the President on Communications, Olusegun Adeniyi, said President Yar’Adua made his position known in Davos, Switzerland at a dinner hosted by the Partnership Against Corruption Initiative.

He expressed confidence that the next Constitutional Amendment would strip these public officials of their immunity.

The President expressed optimism that the removal of the immunity clause from the Constitution would greatly facilitate the work of Nigeria’s anti-corruption Agencies, which, he said have been granted “total and complete independence of action” by his administration.

Employees and the Senior Staff Association of Communication, Transportation and Corporations have given the Management of NITEL, MITEL and NIPOST twenty-one days ultimatum to meet their outstanding demands or face industrial action.

The President General of the Senior Staff Association Comrade Adetunji Adesuntanmi at a news Conference in Abuja said the industrial action would be total.

In an interview, the Secretary General of National Union of Postal and Telecommunications Employees, Comrade Chubby Nwagbara stressed the need for the Management of NIPOST to show more commitment to workers welfare.

Professor Asobie becomes Chairman, NSWG of NEITI

the appointment of Professor Assisi Asobie as Chairman of the National Stakeholder Working Group, NSWG, of the Nigeria Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative NEITI.

A statement issued by the Special Adviser to the President on Communications, Olusegun Adeniyi, said President Yar’Adua has also approved the appointment of other members of the NSWG.

They include Mr. Basil Omiyi, Comrade Shehu Sani, Mr. Peter Esele Alhaji Abubakr Lawal Yar’Adua, Alhaji Jafaru Aliyu Paki and Dr M.I.Yahaya.

Others are Alhaji Aliko Mohammed, Mr. Leke Alder, Mr. T. K. Goriba, Mazi Sam Ohuabunwa, Alhaji Ibrahim Dankwambo, Ofueko Omogui, Hurana Yunusa Sa’eed and Mallam Mahmud Jega.

The Chairman and members of the NSWG will serve for four years, while the Executive Secretary will be in Office for five years.

Some of the terms of reference include ensuring Due Process and Transparency in the payments made by all extractive Industry Companies to the Federal Government and Statutory recipients.

And to eliminate all forms of corrupt practices in determination, payments, receipts and posting of Revenue accruing to the Federal Government from extractive Industry Companies.

ANAN task accountants for high standards

Tribunal orders fresh governorship election in Enugu State

South East Nigeria, on Friday nullified the election of Sullivan Chime as Governor of Enugu State.

The tribunal also ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission INEC, to conduct a fresh governorship election in Enugu State within three months from the date of its ruling.

 Delivering judgement on the petition brought by Democratic Peoples Party governorship candidate in Enugu State, the Tribunal set aside the election of Sullivan Chime on grounds of non compliance with the electoral Act 2006 and electoral malpractices.

In a reaction to the ruling of the tribunal, governor Chime advised the people of Enugu State to remain calm and go about their lawfully business as government business will continue in the State.
He declared that fresh election was necessary to assuage the yearnings of the people.

Tribunal Nullifies Chimes Election

South East Nigeria, on Friday nullified Sullivan Chime’s Election as Governor Enugu State.

The Independent National Electoral Commission INEC, had declared him as Governor after April 14th 2007 gubernatorial election.

It should be recalled that Governor Chime slumped during the Armed Forces Remembrance Day celebration on January 15th 2008.

However, there is no official reaction to tribunal’s ruling from the Governor’s camp.

Jolly Nyame gets court injunction

of the former Governor of Taraba State, Mr. Jolly Nyame for stay of proceedings in his on-going trial for allegedly misappropriating the sum of two point six billion Naira, while in office.

The Court had last year ruled that it had jurisdiction to hear the matter and refused to transfer the case to the High Court in Taraba State.

The former Governor who had gone to the Court of appeal to challenge the decision of the court also prayed the Abuja High Court to stay proceedings pending the application before the lower court.

In her ruling, Justice Ibironke Banjoko observed that the issue of jurisdiction was central to the determination of the matter and that the court is at liberty to exercise its discretion appropriately.

In another development, a Federal High Court in Abuja has fixed the 12th of February to enable counsel to EFCC, Mr. Rotimi Jacobs, file his reply to the application by the former Governor of Abia State, Chief Orji Uzo Kalu, which seeks to stop his trial.

The Court fixed the date following the oral application by counsel to the EFCC who prayed the court to give him time to reply to the application which he said was served him only on Thursday.

The court had given the former Governor’s lawyer, Mr Awa Kalu, thirty days to fill a written application in support of their motion.

The EFCC lawyer, Mr. Rotimi Jacobs also comments on the application before the court.
Former Governor Orji Kalu is standing trial for a 107 count charge bordering on money laundering and misappropriation of public funds and corruption.

Minister inaugurates Committee on tourism  

An eight man Committee has been put in place

for the inauguration of the Nigeria Tourism master plan implementation.
The Committee has the mandate of distillation of the master plan to a project document, with a view to attracting necessary funding and investors for the project.

The man in charge of the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and national Orientation, Prince Adetokumbo Kayode urged members to put in place a tourism strategy that would meet the MDG’s and the twenty-twenty vision of the present administration.

He said the Nigeria Tourism Development Commission NTDC, would be restructured, to enable it deliver the tourism master plan.

INEC to register more parties before 2011 election

Twenty six more political parties may be registered before the next general election in 2011.
                                                                                         
INEC National Commissioner in charge of political parties monitoring, Dr Ishmael Igbani told the News agency of Nigeria in Abuja that twenty six political associations have applied to the Commission for registration as political parties.

 The National Commissioner said that in line with the electoral law, there was no limit to the number of parties to be registered. Nigeria currently has fifty political parties.

Prof Grange: Outbreak of vaccine – preventable diseases unacceptable

Adenike Grange is for now not a happy person.

That is not all; Professor Grange will not accept flimsy excuses for out breaks of any disease that is vaccine-preventable in the country.

Without mincing words, the Minister bared her mind while addressing the emergency meeting with stakeholders on Disease Control in Abuja.

Professor Grange described as worrisome and unacceptable, the recent reports of outbreaks of communicable diseases on diseases in some states of the federation.

According to the minister, the decision to call the meeting was prompted by the urgent need for quick intervention to prevent further spread of the diseases and unnecessary deaths, especially among the rural populace, who bear the burden of the diseases.

Our man, reports that in Edo State, a confirmed yellow-fever outbreak has been reported, while Kaduna, Kano and Gombe States recorded cases of measles epidemics with thirty-one deaths.

Code of Conduct yet to verify assets of Ex-Governors

The Bureau in its two thousand and sis annual report said the ex-governors whose assets are yet to be verified include those of Abia, Anambra, Benue, Borno, Cross River and Ebonyi.

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency has destroyed seventy –six thousand kilograms of illicit drugs seized by the Edo State Command of the Agency between January and December 2007.

Speaking to newsman, the NDLEA Chairman, Alhaji Ahmadu Giade described the seizure as unprecedented and the highest in the history of the Agency.

An Acting Chairman for the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has been appointed.

He is Assistant Commissioner of Police Ibrahim Lamorde, who until this appointment was the EFCC’s Director of Operations.

Jonathan:  Niger Delta Crisis to be resolved through dialogue

The Vice President regretted the recent militant attacks in Port Harcourt and Okrika and appealed to the Ijaw leaders to intervene in the crisis.

FEC approves 70b Textile Revival Fund

A Seventy billion Naira Textile Revival Fund has been approved by the Federal Executive Council.

Similarly, approval was given to the National Poverty eradication Programme to access seven billion Naira from the Millennium Development Goals.

The minister of Information and Communications, Mr. John Odey briefed newsmen on Wednesday at the end of the Federal Executive Council meeting in Abuja.

Yar’Adua orders Ministry of Finance to disclose NASS Account details

President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua has directed the Ministry of Finance to immediately,

disclose to the National Assembly details of all accounts kept and operated by the Federal Government.

A statement signed by the Special Adviser to the President on Communications, Olusegun Adeniyi explained that directive followed some media reports of non-provision by the executive, of information on some Special accounts which might likely delay the passage of the 2008 appropriation bill.

The President assured the National assembly of the full cooperation of the Executive and the speedy provision of all required facts and figures to facilitate the smooth passage of the 2008 appropriation bill.

President Yar’adua said any ministry or agency of government that failed to cooperate with the National Assembly in the discharge of its oversight functions would be sanctioned.

Kaduna: INEC starts distribution of permanent voters card

commence on Tuesday. Chief Ayo Dada made this known in an interview with Radio Nigeria in Kaduna.
He advised eligible voters to visit their respective wards and collect the permanent voters card.
Chief Ayo said those who could not register during the last exercise for being under-aged, should register now.

Also, in an interview, the Electoral Officer, the Kaduna North Local Government, Mallam Baba Shehu said, all logistics had been put in place to ensure a hitch free distribution.
Mallam Baba Shehu advised eligible voters to go along with their temporary card in exchange for their permanent card.

He added that those who lost their temporary cards should go with unit code for verification before the issuance of the permanent card.

Niger Delta: Speakers condemn militants

The Conference of Speakers of the South South State Legislature has condemned the activities of militants in the Niger Delta region.

At the end of a meeting in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, the Conference called on the youths of the Region to shun violence and adopt dialogue to resolve their grievances.

Addressing the Conference after electing him as the new leader and Coordinator of the South South Conference of Speakers, Obong Iganatius Edet urged State Governments in the Region to work towards the development, security and stability of the area.

Obong Edet, who is the Speaker of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, said he would live up to the expectations of the Legislators.

EFCC: 300 police men shun IG’s meeting

Three hundred Police Personnel attached to the EFCC on Thursday, failed to attend a meeting summoned by the Inspector-General, Mr Mike Okiro.

The Police management had last week directed all Police Personnel attached to the EFCC to report to the Force Headquarters, Abuja for briefing.

Newsmen reports that the briefing could not hold as neither the Chairman of the EFCC, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, nor any of its operatives reported for the meeting.

The meeting was scheduled for 10:o’clock in the morning but as at 2pm, none of the officers was present. Later in the day another latter inviting the Personnel for the briefing was reported to have been sent to the EFCC.

Ribadu’s nomination to attend a 12 month course at the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies has for sometime generated controversy.

Fed Govt debt hinders award of contract

The second in command in the upper chamber of the Legislature, Ike Ekweremadu has stated that the Federal Government owes over nine hundred and fifty billion Naira to road construction firms in the country.

He said this when some members of Akaeze Community of Ebonyi state called on him in Enugu. He said the magnitude of debt was hindering the award of contract for the other road works.

According to him government would do everything possible to ensure that it settles the over nine hundred and fifty billion Naira outstanding within the two thousand and eight fiscal year.

Earlier, the leader of the Akaeze, delegation, Senator Anyin Ude said the members came to appeal to the Deputy Senate President to help in ensuring that Federal Government constructs the Akaeze, Okpanka Orji River Road that had been abandoned for years.

Militants attack leaves 12 dead in Port Harcourt

At least twelve people have been killed in Port Harcourt when militants attacked two police stations and Hotel Presidential located in the Oil City.

The Commissioner of Police in Rivers State, Mr Felix Ogbaudu told the News Agency of Nigeria that the militants attacked the Borokiri and Trans-Amadi Police Stations.

At the Borokiri Station, three policemen were killed in a shoot-out between the police and the militants while seven civilians around the area were also killed.

At the Trans-Amadi Police Station, a Police Inspector was killed by the militants. The militants also killed security personnel of the Hotel Presidential and injured many others when they attacked the Hotel.

The Commissioner of Police explained that the militants abandoned three vehicles used for the operation while assorted riffles and a machine gun were recovered from them.

Following the attack, the Rivers State Governor, Chibuike Amaechi has summoned a security meeting to review the situation in the state.

Amaechi lifts state curfew

Governor Chibuke Amaechi of Rivers State has ordered the immediate lifting of the curfew imposed on the state in August following escalating cases of violent crime.

In a statement issued in Port Harcourt, the secretary to the state government, Mr. Magnus Abe said the governor gave the order in consultation with the security agencies in the state.

He however said the order did not apply to Okrika Local Government Area where the curfew would remain in effect from six’ o clock in the evening to six in the morning.

He reminded residents of the state that security was the collective responsibility of all, and urged them to support all government decisions aimed at returning peace and normalcy to the state.

President Yar’ Adua conveyed the sincere condolences of Nigerians to the Bhutto family, the Government of Pakistan and millions of her supporters.

He urged them to take solace in the knowledge that she died on active pursuit of her vision of true democracy for her country, and that in death, she has become an eternal martyr to the cause she believed in with all her heart. Police recalls rationalised officers

Three thousand, one hundred and nine rationalised Inspectors and rank and file of the Nigeria Police Force are to be recalled with effect from the 1st of January 2008.

The Inspector General of Police, Mr Mike Okiro gave the approval for their re-absorption following the report of the screening of the rationalised officers.

A statement in Abuja by the Force Public Relations officer, Assistant Commissioner of Police, Agberebi Akpoebi explained that all the affected officers would undergo re-orientation and short training in their commands.

Russia to assist Nigeria utilize its gas resource effectively

Russia has indicated willingness to assist Nigeria to effectively utilize its gas resource to check losses incurred through gas flaring.

The Acting Ambassador of Russia, Mr. Serge Rogov, who stated this during a visit to Senate President David Mark, also said that his country would increase its aluminium production.

Mr. Rogov commended the leadership of the Senate and remarked that the stability in the legislature was a positive signal to the growth of democracy in the Africa continent.

FRCN rewards staff

Serving and retired staff of the Lagos Operations Directorate of the FRCN who had served the Corporation for between twenty-five and thirty five years on Thursday received long service awards.

Presenting the awards in Lagos the Director-General of the Corporation, Mr. Ben Egbuna challenged other staff to emulate them.

Mr. Egbuna urged all staff to work hard to gain recognition. He said that all FRCN National Stations will continue to reward all dedicated staff emphasising the need for discipline at all times.

In a remark, the Executive Director FRCN Ibadan National Station, Prince Atilade Atoyebi, stressed the need for all staff to be dedicated to the service of humanity, in line with the mandate of FRCN.

Harvest of Awards for Radio Nigeria Staff

Three members of staff of Radio Nigeria have emerged winners of various media awards.

Maureen Anaeke of the Directorate of News and Gregory Odiakosa of Enugu National Station of the FRCN emerged winners in the Diamond Award for Media Excellence.

Funke Treasure Durodola of Lagos operations won in the Red Ribbon Awards on HIV-AIDS organised by journalists against AIDS. She also won the Bournvita Education Reporter of the year award with her story “The Akada Centre in Jiwa, Abuja”.  

In July, she was selected as a finalist of the Henry J. Kaiser HIV Journalism category of the CNN/Multichoice African Journalist of the year Award for her entries “Female Condom Usage in Nigeria” and “Disability and HIV”.

Maureen Anaeke, whose entry on prevention of mother to child transmission won her the Radio Category award, said she was motivated by a desire to improve the lot of women living with HIV.

The other nominees for the category were also from Radio Nigeria. Funke Treasure – Durodola who won the Red Ribbon Prize said she derives inspiration out of a need to impact positively on the society.

Germany/Austria project to reduce infant mortality

About ten hospitals in Kaduna and Kano states have been selected for the training of medical personnel on reduction of infant mortality and promotion of maternal health in the country. Receiving the delegation on behalf of the FRCN Director General, Mr Ben Egbuna, the Deputy Director News, Mr, Mr Ademola Afolabi described as commendable the collaboration between German and Nigerian Rotarians to reduce maternal and infant mortality.

Mr Afolabi expressed confidence that with such an approach the project would be successfully executed.

CBN warns NNPC collecting banks

to remit all oil revenue deposits within twenty four hours of their collection into the CBN account.

The CBN in a statement warned that any erring bank would be sanctioned. It said the non-compliance by some banks to remit oil revenues from NNPC at the appropriate time, had led to the postponement of the Federal accounts Allocation Committee meeting dates, in some instances.

It therefore cautioned that the accounts of any defaulting bank shall be debited in the CBN and that such a Bank, risked being stopped from collecting revenue from NNPC and other Federal Government parastatals.

Chairman, House of Representatives Committee on Downstream Petroleum Resources, Mr Clever Iksikpo, made the call at a forum organised by the Petroleum Technology Association of Nigeria – PETAN.

Mr. Ikisikpo said the country’s local content policy was to domesticate sixty percent of oil field services with seventy percent target by 2010.

He stated that the local content had emerged as veritable resource management tool a sit would ensure that Nigeria developed domestic expertise and realise the full economic impact of oil field activity.

Mr. Ikisikpo expressed the hope that the Local Content Bill now before the National Assembly when passed would further empower government policy.

The President of PETAN, Mr. Shawley Coker said the association would collaborate with government agencies to ensure speedy socio-economic development of the Niger Delta.

Senate Summons Agencies over retirement benefits

Three Government Agencies have been summoned to the Senate to explain how the fifty billion Naira meant for the Public Service Reform in the 2007 budget was used.

They are the offices of the Accountant-General of the Federation, Finance Ministry and the Budget Office, which are to appear before the Committee on Federal Character and Governmental Affairs on Monday next week.

The Chairman of the Committee, Senator Smart Adeyemi who gave the directive during the Budget defence meeting with the Bureau for Public Service Reforms expressed dissatisfaction with the explanation of the Permanent Secretary of the Bureau, Mr. Solomon Matankari on the issue.

Mr Matankari had said that thirty three thousand of the fifty-five thousand core civil servants affected by government’s right sizing had been duly compensated while those in the Parastatals were yet to be paid.

House C’ttee calls on SEC to suspend offers

The House of Representatives Committee on Capital Market has directed the Security and Exchange Commission to suspend all public offers by commercial banks.

The Committee issued the directive when it held an interactive session with the Commission in Abuja.
The Committee Chairman, Mr. Aliyu Wadada, said the directive was based on the inability of the banks to issue share certificates to shareholders who participated in earlier public offers.

Mr. Wadada, said, the Committee was alarmed at the frequency within which the banks were conducting their public offers.
According to him, this has raised suspicion on the claims by the banks on their twenty five billion naira consideration.

However, Mr. Suleiman Kwari, the Acting Director General of the Commission, told the Committee that it lacked the legal backing to enforce the directive.

He said the Security and Exchange Commission, is empowered to ensure compliance with the criteria set for intending investors, who want to access the market by the Investment and Security Act of 1999.

ECOWAS: New policy to tackle poverty and unemployment

To effectively tackle the issues of poverty and unemployment in the ECOWAS Region, a new policy is in the offing.

The policy when fully endorsed and adopted by ECOWAS Council of Ministers and Heads of State will reduce poverty and unemployment, which have direct linkage to crime, conflicts and other social vices.

Chief Justice makes book presentations

The Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Idris Kutigi will on Thursday, the 6th of December 2007, present three publications on the National Industrial Court.

These are the National Industrial Court Act, 2007, which establishes the court as a superior court of record with exclusive jurisdiction to hear and determine labour and Industrial Relations matter in Nigeria.

The National Industrial Court Rules 2007, which prescribed the procedures for the institution and trial of suits, filling and issuance of processes, appearances amongst other; and the Digest of Judgments of the National Industrial Court, a comprehensive review of decisions of the court from 1976 to 2006 aimed at developing a labour jurisprudence for Nigeria.

A statement by the President, National Industrial Court, Justice Babatunde Adejumo states that the public presentation of the three publications will take place at the Transcorp Hilton Hotel, Abuja from eleven o’clock in the morning of Thursday December, 2007.

Jonathan tasks Nigerian Engineers

Vice President Goodluck Jonathan has advised the Nigerian Society of Engineers to adopt stringent measures to sanitise the country’s building Industry.

Akunyili bags International award

In view of her relentless fight against fake drugs and selfless efforts to save lives, the NAFDAC Boss, Professor Dora Akunyili, has bagged another award.

She was honoured by the Italian Government as one of the four top world class women achievers.

Presenting the trophy President of the Italian Regional Council of Aosta valley, Mr EGGON Peron said, the award was initiated to honour women achievers who dedicated their lives to humanitarian works, fight against injustice, dictatorship, corruption and other social vices.

The award was initatede ten years ago by the regional council of Aosta valley, in partnership with international soroptomist club and NGO, s to honour women achievers.

National Drug-law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, has called on parents to inculcate good values in children.

The Chairman of NDLEA, Alhaji Ahmadu was speaking during the presentation of enlightment books in Abuja.

He said only morally sound children would withstand peer influence against indulgence in drug abuse.
Represented by a Director in the agency, Doctor Lawrence Onuoha, the chairman said the Agency had embarked on a deglamorisation campaign against illicit drug trafficking, abuse and its consequence.

In an interview, the Managing Director of a Private Airline and Chairman of the Book Launch, Alhaji Isyaku Rabiu Isyaku advised Nigerians to act responsibly to redeem the nation’s image.
Alhaji Rabiu said commitment to eradicating drug abuse should go beyond mere talks but needed action.

The book launch was attended by stakeholders in the flight against drug abuse which included NAFDAC, CPOC and Law Enforcement Agencies.

Nigeria celebrates World AIDS Day

Nigeria joins the rest of the world to mark the World AIDS Day.It is a day set aside to draw the attention of the global community to the effects of HIV/AIDS on the people.

Africa accounts for about twenty seven million of the world forty million people living with HIV/AIDS. The theme of this year’s celebration is leadership.

The Director General of the National Agency for the Control of AIDS NACA Professor Babatunde Oshotimenhin speaks on the efforts of the government to ensure greater involvement in the national response to AIDS.

And from Kaduna State, the Project Manager of the Kaduna State Action Committee on AIDS, Dr Mark David Anthony reiterated the fact that there is no cure for the virus. He explained that what is obtainable is treatment for HIV/AIDS through anti-retroviral drugs to stop multiplication of the virus.

Dr Anthony said the committee was tackling other oppurnitunistic infections in AIDS patients such as tuberculosis and cancer through collaboration with the Tuberculosis Control Agency.

Muslims observe Eid-El-Kabir festival

Muslims throughout the world are observing the Eid-El-Kabir festival. The Eid festival is celebrated on the10th day of Dhul-Hijja.

Muslims are expected to congregate at praying grounds across the World to observe the customary two Zaka’ats prayers.

Another significant highlight of the Eid is the sacrifice of animals which signifies a symbolic expression of a Muslims readiness to sacrifice everything to Allah’s sake.

An Abuja based cleric, Ustaz Hussain Zakariya speaks on the spiritual significance of the sacrifice.

In Nigeria the Eid celebration will feature durbar in major cities and towns, as well as exchange of gifts and visits among families.
Meanwhile Federal government has declared Wednesday and Thursday as public holidays for the festival.

Jisalo calls for love and care this yuletide

Yar’ Adua to meet Governors, stakeholders over violence in LG polls

Governors and other stakeholders immediately after the Eid-el-Kabir and Christmas holidays.

Addressing journalists at the Presidential Villa, the Special Adviser to the President on Communications, Mr Olusegun Adeniyi said the President had expressed concern over allegations of violence, fraud and rigging which characterised the election.

Also expected at the meeting are the Chairmen and National Secretaries of the PDP, AC, PPA and ANPP as well as other high ranking political office holders and security chiefs.

Russia to assist Nigeria utilize its gas resource effectively

Russia has indicated willingness to assist Nigeria to effectively utilize its gas resource to check losses incurred through gas flaring.

The Acting Ambassador of Russia, Mr. Serge Rogov, who stated this during a visit to Senate President David Mark, also said that his country would increase its aluminium production.

Mr. Rogov commended the leadership of the Senate and remarked that the stability in the legislature was a positive signal to the growth of democracy in the Africa continent.

The Senate President who was represented by the minority leader, Alhaji Ahmed Sani Yerima urged the International Community to utilize the opportunity offered by the Federal Government’s efforts to ensure security of investments.

FRCN rewards staff

Serving and retired staff of the Lagos Operations Directorate of the FRCN who had served the Corporation for between twenty-five and thirty five years on Thursday received long service awards.

Presenting the awards in Lagos the Director-General of the Corporation, Mr. Ben Egbuna challenged other staff to emulate them.

Mr. Egbuna urged all staff to work hard to gain recognition. He said that all FRCN National Stations will continue to reward all dedicated staff emphasising the need for discipline at all times.

In a remark, the Executive Director FRCN Ibadan National Station, Prince Atilade Atoyebi, stressed the need for all staff to be dedicated to the service of humanity, in line with the mandate of FRCN.
                                            
One of the Awardees Mr. Amos Alfa commended the Corporation for the gesture and pledged that they will be more dedicated to their duties.

Yar’Adua begins 4 days visit to US

President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua has arrived Washington DC on a four day official Visit to the United States of America

President  Yar’Adua is expected to meet with President Gorge Bush at the White House.

The President is accompanied by his wife Hajia Turai Yar’Adua, Governor Ibrahim Shema of Katsina State, Minister, Minister of Defence, Alhaji Yayale Ahmed and the Commander of the UN – AU Force in Darfur, General Martins Luther-Agwai.

Harvest of Awards for Radio Nigeria Staff

Three members of staff of Radio Nigeria have emerged winners of various media awards.

Maureen Anaeke of the Directorate of News and Gregory Odiakosa of Enugu National Station of the FRCN emerged winners in the Diamond Award for Media Excellence.

Funke Treasure Durodola of Lagos operations won in the Red Ribbon Awards on HIV-AIDS organised by journalists against AIDS. She also won the Bournvita Education Reporter of the year award with her story “The Akada Centre in Jiwa, Abuja”.  

In July, she was selected as a finalist of the Henry J. Kaiser HIV Journalism category of the CNN/Multichoice African Journalist of the year Award for her entries “Female Condom Usage in Nigeria” and “Disability and HIV”.

Maureen Anaeke, whose entry on prevention of mother to child transmission won her the Radio Category award, said she was motivated by a desire to improve the lot of women living with HIV.

The other nominees for the category were also from Radio Nigeria. Funke Treasure – Durodola who won the Red Ribbon Prize said she derives inspiration out of a need to impact positively on the society.

Germany/Austria project to reduce infant mortality

About ten hospitals in Kaduna and Kano states have been selected for the training of medical personnel on reduction of infant mortality and promotion of maternal health in the country. The Chairman of Nigeria Fistula Project, Dr Kola Owoka stated this during a courtesy visit to the FRCN Headquarters Abuja.

In His address, the International Co-ordinator for Germany and Austria of the Fistula Project, Professor Robert Zinsier noted that the project was focusing on Nigeria because it is one of the countries with the highest rate of maternal and infant mortality in the world.

Receiving the delegation on behalf of the FRCN Director General, Mr Ben Egbuna, the Deputy Director News, Mr, Mr Ademola Afolabi described as commendable the collaboration between German and Nigerian Rotarians to reduce maternal and infant mortality.

Mr Afolabi expressed confidence that with such an approach the project would be successfully executed.

CBN warns NNPC collecting banks

to remit all oil revenue deposits within twenty four hours of their collection into the CBN account.

The CBN in a statement warned that any erring bank would be sanctioned. It said the non-compliance by some banks to remit oil revenues from NNPC at the appropriate time, had led to the postponement of the Federal accounts Allocation Committee meeting dates, in some instances.

It therefore cautioned that the accounts of any defaulting bank shall be debited in the CBN and that such a Bank, risked being stopped from collecting revenue from NNPC and other Federal Government parastatals.

Chairman, House of Representatives Committee on Downstream Petroleum Resources, Mr Clever Iksikpo, made the call at a forum organised by the Petroleum Technology Association of Nigeria – PETAN.

Mr. Ikisikpo said the country’s local content policy was to domesticate sixty percent of oil field services with seventy percent target by 2010.

He stated that the local content had emerged as veritable resource management tool a sit would ensure that Nigeria developed domestic expertise and realise the full economic impact of oil field activity.

Mr. Ikisikpo expressed the hope that the Local Content Bill now before the National Assembly when passed would further empower government policy.

The President of PETAN, Mr. Shawley Coker said the association would collaborate with government agencies to ensure speedy socio-economic development of the Niger Delta.

Senate Summons Agencies over retirement benefits

Three Government Agencies have been summoned to the Senate to explain how the fifty billion Naira meant for the Public Service Reform in the 2007 budget was used.

They are the offices of the Accountant-General of the Federation, Finance Ministry and the Budget Office, which are to appear before the Committee on Federal Character and Governmental Affairs on Monday next week.

The Chairman of the Committee, Senator Smart Adeyemi who gave the directive during the Budget defence meeting with the Bureau for Public Service Reforms expressed dissatisfaction with the explanation of the Permanent Secretary of the Bureau, Mr. Solomon Matankari on the issue.

Mr Matankari had said that thirty three thousand of the fifty-five thousand core civil servants affected by government’s right sizing had been duly compensated while those in the Parastatals were yet to be paid.

House C’ttee calls on SEC to suspend offers

The House of Representatives Committee on Capital Market has directed the Security and Exchange Commission to suspend all public offers by commercial banks.

The Committee issued the directive when it held an interactive session with the Commission in Abuja.
The Committee Chairman, Mr. Aliyu Wadada, said the directive was based on the inability of the banks to issue share certificates to shareholders who participated in earlier public offers.

Mr. Wadada, said, the Committee was alarmed at the frequency within which the banks were conducting their public offers.
According to him, this has raised suspicion on the claims by the banks on their twenty five billion naira consideration.

However, Mr. Suleiman Kwari, the Acting Director General of the Commission, told the Committee that it lacked the legal backing to enforce the directive.

He said the Security and Exchange Commission, is empowered to ensure compliance with the criteria set for intending investors, who want to access the market by the Investment and Security Act of 1999.

ECOWAS: New policy to tackle poverty and unemployment

To effectively tackle the issues of poverty and unemployment in the ECOWAS Region, a new policy is in the offing.

The policy when fully endorsed and adopted by ECOWAS Council of Ministers and Heads of State will reduce poverty and unemployment, which have direct linkage to crime, conflicts and other social vices.

Chief Justice makes book presentations

The Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Idris Kutigi will on Thursday, the 6th of December 2007, present three publications on the National Industrial Court.

These are the National Industrial Court Act, 2007, which establishes the court as a superior court of record with exclusive jurisdiction to hear and determine labour and Industrial Relations matter in Nigeria.

The National Industrial Court Rules 2007, which prescribed the procedures for the institution and trial of suits, filling and issuance of processes, appearances amongst other; and the Digest of Judgments of the National Industrial Court, a comprehensive review of decisions of the court from 1976 to 2006 aimed at developing a labour jurisprudence for Nigeria.

A statement by the President, National Industrial Court, Justice Babatunde Adejumo states that the public presentation of the three publications will take place at the Transcorp Hilton Hotel, Abuja from eleven o’clock in the morning of Thursday December, 2007.

Jonathan tasks Nigerian Engineers

Vice President Goodluck Jonathan has advised the Nigerian Society of Engineers to adopt stringent measures to sanitise the country’s building Industry.

Jonathan said, such measures were necessary to check the activities of quack which often led to collapsed buildings.

The Vice President stated that Nigerian Engineers had a major role to play, if the country’s dream of becoming one of the leading economies by 2020 was to be realised.

The President of the Nigerian Society of Engineers, Emeka Eze, said though the Society had come a long way, it was still faced with some challenges.

State House correspondent reports that the Nigerian Society of Engineers which was founded in 1995 has about thirty-five thousand members and fifty-one branches across the country.

Akunyili bags International award

In view of her relentless fight against fake drugs and selfless efforts to save lives, the NAFDAC Boss, Professor Dora Akunyili, has bagged another award.

She was honoured by the Italian Government as one of the four top world class women achievers.

Presenting the trophy President of the Italian Regional Council of Aosta valley, Mr EGGON Peron said, the award was initiated to honour women achievers who dedicated their lives to humanitarian works, fight against injustice, dictatorship, corruption and other social vices.

The award was initatede ten years ago by the regional council of Aosta valley, in partnership with international soroptomist club and NGO, s to honour women achievers.

NDLEA seeks for re-orientation on children

National Drug-law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, has called on parents to inculcate good values in children.

The Chairman of NDLEA, Alhaji Ahmadu was speaking during the presentation of enlightment books in Abuja.

He said only morally sound children would withstand peer influence against indulgence in drug abuse.
Represented by a Director in the agency, Doctor Lawrence Onuoha, the chairman said the Agency had embarked on a deglamorisation campaign against illicit drug trafficking, abuse and its consequence.

In an interview, the Managing Director of a Private Airline and Chairman of the Book Launch, Alhaji Isyaku Rabiu Isyaku advised Nigerians to act responsibly to redeem the nation’s image.
Alhaji Rabiu said commitment to eradicating drug abuse should go beyond mere talks but needed action.

The book launch was attended by stakeholders in the flight against drug abuse which included NAFDAC, CPOC and Law Enforcement Agencies.

Nigeria celebrates World AIDS Day

Nigeria joins the rest of the world to mark the World AIDS Day.It is a day set aside to draw the attention of the global community to the effects of HIV/AIDS on the people.

Africa accounts for about twenty seven million of the world forty million people living with HIV/AIDS. The theme of this year’s celebration is leadership.

The Director General of the National Agency for the Control of AIDS NACA Professor Babatunde Oshotimenhin speaks on the efforts of the government to ensure greater involvement in the national response to AIDS.

Vice President Goodluck Jonathan is about now leading a walk from FCDA to Eagle Square venue of the celebration.

And from Kaduna State, the Project Manager of the Kaduna State Action Committee on AIDS, Dr Mark David Anthony reiterated the fact that there is no cure for the virus. He explained that what is obtainable is treatment for HIV/AIDS through anti-retroviral drugs to stop multiplication of the virus.

Dr Anthony said the committee was tackling other oppurnitunistic infections in AIDS patients such as tuberculosis and cancer through collaboration with the Tuberculosis Control Agency.
