A PDP chieftain in Edo State, Chief Francis Inegbeneki, was on Sunday arrested by the police in the state on the eve of the ward congress.
Meanwhile, one of the Commissioners in the Edo State Oil and Gas Producing Areas Commission and former Chairman of Ikpoba Okhai Local Government Council, Mr Benson Effionayi, on Sunday escaped death when suspected assassins stormed his GRA residence, destroying his building when they could not find him.
Chief Inegbeneki, who was arrested while briefing journalists, alleged that the former Chairman of the party’s Board of Trustees, Chief Tony Anenih had accused him of organising the walk-out by the two-time Governor of the defunct Bendel State, Dr Samuel Ogbemudia, at the party’s stake holder’s meeting last Thursday.
He said: “After the incident that day, I received a call that I should attend a meeting at Nova Hotel last Saturday. But I got the information that they have arranged to assassinate me at the meeting.
They arranged it that there will be a shootout in the place then they will say I brought my boys to the meeting and a fight broke out and that was how I was killed”.
“After their plans failed, a detachment of mobile policemen came to my house at Opoji, that they came to withdraw the mobile policemen with me. But I told them I have no mobile policemen around me. But they conducted a search in my house and found nothing”.
I want to raise this alarm because they want to frame me up and kill me. I am appealing to the IG of police and the Edo State Commissioner of Police to protect my life. The Commissioner should be neutral in this fight because what they want to do is to make me vulnerable to attack,” he said.
