CNPP accuses Yar’Adua of lack of clear agenda
President Umar Musa Yar’Adua was accused by the Conference of Nigeria Political Parties of running a regime with no clear agenda on several burning issues facing the nation saying his first 100 days in office was characterized by inconsistency, reversal and somersault.
Citing several instances including the appointment of the Acting Inspector General of Police, his rush to reform the electoral process when the electoral tribunals are still sitting, the redenomination debacle and inconsistencies in the Niger Delta, CNPP in a statement signed by Osita Okechukwu expressed the fear that there were danger signals for the nation ahead.
The statement reads: “The Conference of Nigeria Political Parties (CNPP), at a marathon meeting reviewed the 100 Days of President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua and came to the inevitable conclusion, that the regime has no clear agenda on any burning issue and thus the 100 Days sign-posted inconsistency, reversal and somersault.
“Whereas we acknowledge President Yar'Adua’s admittance that the electoral process that imposed him on Nigerians is flawed; we however take exception to the reversal of his pronouncement during inauguration that he will embark on electoral reforms after the Election Petitions Tribunal have concluded the cases.
“Today, contrary to his pronouncement, the Electoral Reform Panel has been set up, with a Chief Justice of Nigeria as Chairman and Chairman of Nigeria Bar Association (NBA) as a member. This mischievous self preservation and survival tactics is meant to influence the Tribunals, divert public attention and send wrong signals to the international community."
