Nigeria short of Affirmative Action on women participation in the decision making
Guests on platform, a Radio Nigeria Network Programme, have expressed concern that Nigeria has not complied fully with the minimum thirty percent women participation in
decision making as demanded by the Affirmative Action.
Speaking on the programme a former Minister of Women Affairs and Youth Development, Hajia Aisha Ismail, urged the government to domesticate all the international protocols signed by the country.
Hajia Aisha remarked that Nigerian Women had been participating in building the nation’s democracy from a disadvantaged position.
Another guest on the programme and a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Dr. Caro Nwosu insisted that women should not be excluded in whatever system any political party wished to adopt.
Dr. Nwosu who was the only female aspirant for the position of the PDP, National Chairman during the Party’s recent National Convention, argued that as a woman, participation in politics involved a lot of sacrifice by her husband and children.
Also speaking on the programme, the co-ordinator of he Women Rights Advancement and Protection Alternative, WRAPA, in the Federal Capital Territory, Hajia Rabi Abdullahi said Nigeria still had a long way to go in gender equity.
Hajia Rabi observed that Non-governmental Organizations, NGOs were making appreciable success in their campaigns against violence on women.

Workers celebrates May Day
Today is May Day, otherwise referred to as Workers’ Day, a day workers celebrate their contributions to the social and economic development of the nation.
May Day is in commemoration of the 1886 event in which some American Workers were killed while demanding improved living conditions.
In Nigeria, the Day will be marked with rallies and March pasts by workers at State capitals and the Federal capital Territory.
This year’s celebration is coming amidst the global increase in the prices of food items, resulting in riots in some countries.

House to reintroduce FOI bill
The Freedom of Information bill, which has been thrown out in the House of Representatives is to be reintroduced next week.
The Chairman of the Committee on Rules and Business, Chief Ita Enang, told National Assembly Correspondents that it was through wrong impression that the Bill was thrown out.
Also speaking, the sponsor of the Bill, Mrs Abike Dabiri-Erewa from Lagos State, said when passed, would promote accountability and good governance in the country.
Mrs Dabiri-Erewa and Chief Ita Enang assured Nigerians that the Freedom of Information Bill was aimed at correcting some of the misconceptions in government activities.

Yar’Adua condoles Adesanya’s family
President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua has condoled the family of the late Pa Abraham Adesanya over the death of their father.
In a letter, President Yar’Adua said though Pa Adesanya has passed on at a ripe old age, millions of Nigerians mourn the loss of an icon of the nation’s struggle for justice, equity and good governance.
The President described Chief Adesanya as a patriot who stood out firmly all through the political history since independence, for the loftiest ideals, of democracy, the rule of law and committed leadership.
President Yar’Adua said as a lawyer, legislator, leader of Afenifere, and Pan Nigerian nationalist, Pa Abraham Adesanya was one politician who consistently made the peoples’ cause his own.
According to the President Chief Adesanya’s exemplary courage shone like a beacon of hope, while his resilience remained a constant check on the excesses of tyranny during the darkest days of dictatorship.
President Yar’Adua prayed that Almighty God grants his soul eternal rest, and urged Nigerians to emulate the wisdom, high standards and courage of Chief Adesanya.

ILO: Nigeria to represent West Africa on the Governing body for 3yrs
Nigeria has been selected to represent the West African sub region, on the Governing body of the International labour Organisation for three years in observer capacity.
Fifty three AU member countries took the decision at an ordinary session of African Union labour and Social Affairs Commission in Adis-Asaba Ethiopia.
Ghana will serve as Deputy Member, while Mozambique, South Africa, Tanzania Guinea and Tunisia will represent other sub regions in Africa.
African membership of the governing body will be from 2008 to 2011 and will include six titular seats and seven deputy seats.
Commenting on the outcome of the meeting, the leader of the Nigeria delegation and permanent Secretary Federal Ministry of Labour Alhaji Suleiman Kassim called on African countries to continue with the spirit of consultation and negotiation exhibited during the meetings.

Mark advocates functional education system in the country
Senate President David Mark has advocated a functional education system as a solution the socio economic and political problems of the country.
In an interview with NAN, the President’s Special Adviser on Communications, Mr Olusegun Adeniyi, said in Wiesbaden, Germany that the President was in good health and fully prepared to confront critical challenges on his return.
According to him, the President intends to give priority attention to measures aimed at addressing the impact of the current global rise in food prices as it affects the ordinary Nigerian.
Mr Adeniyi added that President Yar’Adua was committed to the implementation of the 2008 budget.
The President flew out to Germany on April 14, after signing the 2008 Appropriation Bill.

Senate President David Mark has advocated a functional education system as a solution the socio economic and political problems of the country.
Addressing the management team of Babcock University which visited him, Senator Mark stated that functional education was needed in the nation’s quest for even development.
He noted that the private university had made a record by running an institution without industrial action or students’ unrest so far.
Earlier in a remark, the Vice Chancellor of Bancock University, Professor Kayode Makinde had briefed the Senate President of the plan by the Institution to unveil a College of Health that would provide functional education and qualitative health care delivery in the country.

FG sets up C’ttee to manage the country’s Foreign Reserves
A committee has been set by up the Federal Government to explore the possibility of establishing a Sovereign Wealth fund to manage the country’s Foreign Reserves, put at over fifty-eight billion dollars.

OGUN: Tribunal upholds election of Gbenga Daniel
The Ogun State Election Petition Tribunal has upheld the election of Chief Gbenga Daniel as Governor of Ogun State.
Ruling on a petition filed by the ANPP candidate in the 2007 governorship election Senator Ibikunle Amosun, the tribunal noted that there were contradictions in the submission of many of the plaintiff’s witnesses.
Based on the observation the tribunal said the petition lacked sufficient evidence and substance that could lead to the nullification of Governor Gbenga Daniel’s election.

Yar’Adua directs Govt agencies to fully implement 2008 budget
President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua has directed all agencies of government to implement fully the 2008 budget with reference to due process.
The President gave the directive in Abuja while singing into law the 2008 Appropriation Bill of two point seven trillion Naira.
The signing was witnessed by Vice President Goodluck Jonathan, Senate President David Mark, Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr. Usman Nafada, among others.

Anambra House of Assembly adjourns indefinitely
The Anambra State House of Assembly has adjourned indefinitely.
This is to enable members of the House to resolve the impasse associated with this year's appropriation bill.
The Speaker, Chief Anayo Nnebe, in directing the majority leader of the House to move a motion to this effect, said the indefinite adjournment followed the intervention of the Elders Forum.
According to him, the adjournment would enable members of the Anambra State Elders Forum to critically examine the alleged delay in the passage of the bill.
He however, said that the House would reconvene as soon as the Elders Forum completes its assignment.

House C’ttee on Petroleum asks FG to establish testing laboratories for DPR
The House of Representatives Committee on Petroleum Resources, Downstream, has asked the Federal Government to establish testing laboratories for the Department of
Petroleum Resources, DPR, to ascertain the quality imported.
The Chairman of the Committee, chief Clever Ikisikpo, stated this while briefing National Assembly Correspondents on steps being taken by the Committee to ease the current fuel scarcity in the country.
Chief Ikisikpo, said that the Committee had invited all the stakeholders in the nation’s petroleum industry for a meeting on how to improve the distribution and supply of petroleum products to all parts of the country.
Chief Clever Ikisikpo stressed the need for the NNPC to work in close collaboration with relevant stakeholders in the industry and the Committee to ensure that Nigerians did not suffer untold hardship as a result of fuel scarcity.

Adamawa: INEC postpones re-run Guber election
The re-run governorship election in Adamawa state scheduled for this Saturday has been postponed indefinitely.
Addressing newsmen in Abuja, the National Electoral Commissioner in charge of information and publicity, Mr. Philip Umedi Junior said the decision followed INEC’s resolved to act in accordance with the rule of law.
Some of the political parties led by the Labour Party had asked the Katsina High Court to stop INEC from conducting the election.
They also wanted the court to determine whether the parties that did not participate in last year’s governorship election had legal rights to take part in the re-run.

High Court upturns revocation licence of Societe Generale Bank
Following the judgement of the Federal High Court up turning the revocation of the licence of Societe Generale Bank of Nigeria by the Central Bank of Nigeria the CBN,
says it will abide by the ruling of the court.
In a statement in Abuja, after a meeting of the financial sector surveillance Committee, the CBN said as a responsible and law abiding corporate body, it would not appeal the ruling.
Consequently, it has given Societe Generale Bank of Nigeria thirty-days to complete all processes relating to its acquisition by another bank as ruled by the court.
It says its action is in the interest of depositors and the banking system.
The statement assured all Nigerians of the commitment of Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation and the CBN to protect depositors and members of the investing public.
The Federal High Court had on the second of this month ruled that Societe Generale Bank should have been given sufficient notice to meet the conditions attached to the payment of eighty percent of the its indebtedness to the CBN.

NGO advises Nigeria Police to equip forensic department
The Nigeria Police Force has been advised to adequately equip its forensic department for effective crime investigations.
The Executive Director of Crime Victims Foundation, Mrs. Gloria Egbuji, said that this had become necessary in view of the upsurge in crime rate, particularly, murder cases.
She explained that if the Police forensic department is adequately equipped, it would go a long way in assisting Police Officers to detect perpetrators of crimes.
Mrs. Egbuji noted that some suspects suffered various forms of torture during interrogation due to lack of forensic equipment in the course of investigations.
She also advised the force to find a means of documenting and distributing the photographs of suspects and their finger prints to all Police formations for future reference.
Mrs. Egbuji who called for respect for the rule of law and the rights of suspects by Policemen also expressed support for community policing, but advised that its implementation should be gradual, particularly in areas like Lagos.

FG cancels Ajaokuta and National Iron Ore concession agreement
The concession agreement between the Federal Government and Global Infrastructure Nigeria limited, in respect of the Ajaokuta Steel Company and the National Iron Ore Mining Company have been cancelled by the Federal Executive Council.

Obasanjo may appear for probe – Elumelu
The House of Representatives Committee on Power probing contracts awarded by the last administration says it will not hesitate to invite former President Olusegun
Obasanjo to appear before it, if it becomes necessary at the end of its tour of project sites.
Chairman of the committee, Mr Ndudi Elumelu stated this in an interview with Journalists in Calabar after a courtesy call on Cross River State Governor, Mr Liyel Imoke.
Mr Elumelu said they had to go to all the zones to ascertain the extent of work done so far.
Other personalities like the former Vice President, former Senate President and former Speaker may be invited by the committee if the need arises.
In an address of welcome, the Governor of Cross River, Mr Liyel Imoke noted that the job of the committee was a very important one to the country saying he was pleased that the committee deemed it fit to go round and visit the various project sites.
Governor Imoke said the visit would afford members the opportunity to see things for themselves.

National Round-table seeks collaboration with FRCN

Alhaji Ibrahim Idris of the PDP has been declared the Governor-elect of Kogi State.
The INEC Resident Commissioner Mr Ayo Adakeja made the declaration in Lokoja after the final collation of all the results from the twenty-one local government areas.

Kogi Guber election holds today
Kogi will make history as the first state in the country in which the governorship election will be re-run in compliance with the tribunal’s ruling nullifying the state’s
gubernatorial election held in April 2007. The verdict of the lower court was upheld by the Court of Appeal.
In order to ensure that the election is hitch-free, the national headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) relocated its entire staff to Lokoja for effective monitoring.

Nigeria and Benin to create River Vista for boundary identification
Nigeria and Benin Republic are to create a River Vista along the Adjare River to make their International Boundary easily noticeable along the Tongeji Island in Ogun State and D’ajarra town in Benin Republic.
The Project which would be jointly funded would entail the clearing of weeds along the 27 kilometre Adjare River which formed the natural boundary line in that border sector.
The Vista project was announced when both the Director General of National Boundary Commission, Alhaji Sadiq Diggi represented by the Director, International Boundaries, Alhaji Bashir Shettima with his counterpart, the Director General of Republic of Benin Boundary Commission, Mr Jules Gontan Capo Chi Chi visited the area.
Commenting on the Nigerian/Benin Republic Boundary, Alhaji Diggi said it was the most peaceful in the entire West African Sub-region.
He assured the boarder Communities that they would be involved in the Vista project to ensure speedy completion.
In his contribution, Mr Capo Chi Chi said Nigeria and Benin Republic were basically one people with shared historical and cultural ties.
He commended Traditional Rulers in the communities for their efforts at ensuring peaceful co- existence in their domains.
Responding, Oba Olorun Kosi Okiki Sule 1 of Tongeji Island in Ogun State commended the good gesture of the Governments of both Countries.

US Govt donates 4 security body scanners to NDLEA
The United States Government donated four security body scanners to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA.
At the presentation and inauguration of one of the machines installed at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport Abuja, the US Ambassador to Nigeria Mrs. Robin Sanders said the gesture was part of efforts to support NDLEA in the its fight against drug trafficking.

National Bureau of statistics introduces new ways to check inflation
New ways to measure the rate of inflation in the country are to be introduced by the National Bureau of statistics next month.
The Assistant Director, Public and International Relations, Mr H.C. Eteama told Nigeria that the measure was necessitated by the shift in the consumption pattern of Nigerians.
According to him, Nigerians now spend more money on non food items especially on Telecommunication.
Mr Eteama said that both the old and new ways would run concurrently.
He said the new pattern was in line with International best practice.

RIVERS: Police Commissioner warns political parties against LG Elections
Political Parties in Rivers State have been warned against acts capable of disrupting the peaceful conduct of Saturday’s Local Government election.

Former Minister advocates integration of hunters into security system
A former minister of finance, Dr Onaolapo Soleye has advocated the integration of traditional hunters into the nation’s security system to guarantee the protection of lives and property.
He made the call on Tuesday at Ake palace in Abeokuta, Ogun state, where hunters from all over the country converged to deliberate on matters of mutual interest.
Dr Soleye, who said he took up hunting as a hobby from childhood, noted that traditional hunters had played significant roles in the protection and founding of communities.
Dr Soleye pointed out that the organized hunters apart from being the custodians of culture were noted for honesty and integrity in matters of security.
Also speaking, the chief host and Alake of Egbaland, Oba Adedotun Gbadebo assured the hunters of adequate support and recognition of their role in the society.

House C’ttee probing power sector meets on Wednesday
On Wednesday, the House Committee on Power and Steel probing power sector funding between 1999 to 2007 will meet to consider over 80 exhibits presented to it during its public hearing, more revelations have emerged on how the former
president, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, waived due process for payments and made anticipatory approvals for the power projects.
Correspondent reports that the Implementation Committee also incorporated the Niger Delta Power Holding Company Plc with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) and made 25 per cent advance payments to three companies, Messers Lahmeyer International/O.T. Otis Engineering and a supplier of power generation equipment and related services, General Electric Company (GE), without the necessary approval.
A document made available to newsmen showed that the Federal Ministry of Power had written to Obasanjo on 22nd November 2005 vide a letter FMP&S/HM/ABJ/033 entitled “Implementation of the Niger Delta Integrated National Power Project: Request for Approval for Payments”.

Christians celebrate Easter
Again violence, hatred and were injustice revisited by Pope Benedict who, as Christians marked the resurrection of Jesus Christ, decried the many wounds that continue to disfigure humanity in our own day.
The Pope, who will be 81, next month, celebrated an Easter Mass for tens thousands people in St. Peter's Square.
The Sunday mass came hours after an Easter vigil service on Saturday night where, in a surprise move, the Pope baptised Moslem-born convert Magdi Allam, 55, an outspoken journalist and fierce critic of Islamic extremism.
The Egyptian-born Allam's conversion to Christianity - he took the name "Christian" for his baptism - was kept secret until the Vatican disclosed it in a statement less than an hour before the Saturday night service began.
Allam, who is a strong supporter of Israel, is under police protection following threats against him.
Allam defended the pope in 2006 when the pontiff made a speech in Regensburg, Germany, that many Muslims perceived as depicting Islam as a violent faith.
The Vatican statement announcing Allam was joining Catholicism said all newcomers were "equally important before God's love and welcome in the community of the Church".
Allam, who has been living in Italy for 35 years, has said he was never a very devout Muslim. Still, his conversion to Christianity came as a surprise.

Nigeria celebrates water day
Nigeria joins the rest of the world to celebrate water day. The United Nations General Assembly in December 1992 declared March 22 every year as World Water
Day to highlight the importance of Safe drinking water to human survival and development and to encourage governments to expand access to it.
Some Nigerians who spoke to Radio Nigeria on the Water situation stressed the need for government to intensify efforts at making them have access to safe water.
The UNICEF Deputy country Representatives in Nigeria, Dr Robert Limlim told Radio Nigeria that the Theme of the celebration which is “Sanitation Matters” was significant.
Also contributing, the country Representative of Water Aid International, a non-governmental organisation, Dr Jonathan Burton spoke on the organisation’s efforts to support Nigeria in its effort to provide safe water to the people.
The Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Water Resources, Professor Oladapo Afolabi spoke on government effort to make Nigerians enjoy safe water and sanitation.

Christians mark Good Friday
As Christians all over the world mark Good Friday, the Catholic Archbishop of Abuja, the Most Reverend John Onayikan, speaks on the essence of the event.
Archbishop Onayikan, who is also the President of the Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, said the day was called Good Friday, because it was on the Cross that Jesus Christ won salvation for mankind.

UN commends Nigeria/Cameroon boundary dispute resolution
The United Nations has commended the political will and maturity exhibited by the governments of Nigeria and Cameroon to resolve their Land and Maritime boundary dispute.
The outgoing Chairman of the Nigeria/Cameroon Mixed Commission and Special Representative of the UN Secretary General for West Africa, Mr Lamine Cissee made the commendation in an interview with Radio Nigeria in Yaoundé, Cameroon.

NAICOM Releases Guidelines for High Rise Buildings
The National Insurance Commission, NAICOM, has released guidelines for insuring high rise buildings under construction.
The Commissioner for Insurance,
Mr Fola Daniel announced the development in Abuja at the launch of Motor Accident Victims Insurance Compensation Scheme.
Mr Daniel explained that the pilot programme for the building Insurance Scheme would begin in Abuja, Lagos and other major cities.
The pilot programme would take care of buildings more than two floors and public buildings under construction.

The new sector Commander in the State, Mr Angus Ibezim during a courtesy visit to the General Manager of Radio Nigeria Heartland F.M Owerri, said the FRSC, was ready to comply with the act establishing the commission.
Mr Ibezim solicited the cooperation of Radio Nigeria Heartland F.M Owerri in covering the activities of the Commission and its assistance in educating the people on road hazards.
He commended the station for educating motorists on traffic rules and regulations.
General Manager of Radio Nigeria Heartland FM Owerri, Mr Chika Emerenwa, who received the sector Commander in his office, said the Station was ready to partner with the Commission to enlighten the public on the dangers of over speed and other traffic rules.
Mr Emerenwa blamed road accidents mainly on people’s bad behaviours on roads.

Minister calls for collaboration between oil companies and NBDA
The Minister of State for Science and Technology, Dr Alhassan Bako Zaku has stressed the need for a strong collaboration between the oil companies in the Niger Delta and the National Biotechnology Development Agency to train youths in the area to be useful citizens.
Dr Zaku made the call in Abuja on a facility tour of the National Biotechnology Development Agency.

A technical committee has been set up by the National Economic Council to produce a strategic document on how to harness the country’s agricultural potentials for economic growth.
Briefing newsmen after the council meeting on Monday at the Presidential villa, Abuja, Governor Ikedi Ohakim of Imo State said the time had come for Nigeria to take practical steps to realise its mission.
The meeting also discussed issues concerning excess crude oil revenue and the deductions for the construction of Primary Health Care Centres in the local government areas.
The Minister of National Planning, Alhaji Sanusi Dagash gave further explanations. State House Correspondent reports that the next meeting of the National Economic Council is scheduled for the 21st of next month.

Abuja: Court Fixes April for $6bn Case against Pfizer
A Federal High Court in Abuja has fixed the 10th of April to continue the hearing of a suit in which the Federal Government is asking
a compensatory damage of about six billion US dollars against Pfizer Pharmaceutical Company.
The Federal Government had in a criminal suit accused the company of causing the death of about two hundred children in Kano as well as physical deformation to victims of its frovan vaccines.
In another civil suit before Justice Anuri Chikere, Pfizer is seeking to quash the report that indicted their company.
In both cases Counsel to the Federal Government, Mr. Obinna Ogbuagu, told the Court that they having problem serving some of the respondents who are based in overseas.
Government he said was in the process of obtaining court orders from the country of origin of the respondents in order to serve them.
While the Federal Government’s Counsel did not raise any objection to the application brought by representatives of the victims asking to be joined in the matter, counsel to Pfizer, Mr Anthony Idigbe opposed it saying that it was not necessary and was delaying the matter.
The Trial Judge, Justice Anuri Chikere therefore advised the parties to ensure that the written addresses on the application on joinder are exchanged among them before the next sitting of the court.

FCT Minister inaugurates C’ttee on retrenchment
The Minister of FCT, Dr Aliyu Modibbo Umar has inaugurated a committee to look into complaints arising from the last retrenchment in the FCT.
In a statement, Dr Modibbo explained that the administration would ensure that justice was done to civil servants affected by the exercise.
The statement also quoted the Committee Chairman, Dr Rafiq Ogbunbambi as promising that all complaints would be thoroughly investigated in accordance with the civil service rules and regulations.

FG earmarks N57b for National Agricultural Land Mapping Project
The Federal Government has earmarked fifty-seven billion Naira for the National Agricultural Land Mapping Project.
A Director in the Ministry of Agriculture and Water Resources, Mr Funsho Akilapa, said at the 27th regular meeting of the National Agricultural Development Council (NADC) in Abuja that the programme would be implemented over three budgetary years from 2008 to 2010.
He said the project would be funded through direct budgetary allocations by the Federal Government; NADC is the highest organ on agriculture policy formulation in the country and comprises State Directors of Agriculture and officers, Project Managers and the Academia.
Mr Akilapa said the Federal Executive Council, FEC, had approved a take-off grant of two billion Naira for the project in the 2008 budget.
He said that President Umaru Yar’Adua late last year approved a presidential initiative on agricultural land mapping to address the issue of land title certification.
According to him, through the project, the Ministry would delineate and map Nigeria’s agricultural land, which include farmlands, stock routes, grazing reserves and water bodies for certification.

The Plateau State Government has inaugurated a twelve member committee for its four – year strategic development plan.
Governor Johan Jang said on the Occasion that the committee was expected to produce a document that would serve as a catalyst for the speedy growth of the state.
He said that although the committee had a list of technical areas to focus on, it would not be restricted if it must succeed.

FG to sensitize farmers on strategic grains reserve - Odey
The Federal Government is to embark on massive sensitization of farmers in the country on the benefits of the strategic grains reserve.
The Minister of Information and Communications, Mr John Odey told Newsmen in Abuja that the grains would soon be released.
He advised co-operative societies to organise themselves to make it easy for the Government to reach out to them and to also avoid diversion.
Mr Odey gave more insight on the plans of the Federal Government to release the reserve, to cushion the effects of the hike in price of commodities.

Nigeria joins the rest of the International Community to observe the World Glaucoma Day.
It is a day set aside to draw attention to effects of disease. The President of the Nigerian Ophotometrics Association of Nigeria Dr. Uduak Christabell Udom explains why the disease is described as a sneak thief of sight.
Dr Christabell Udom told Radio Nigeria in an interview that early detection of the disease was the only means of avoiding the ultimate loss of the sight.
Also speaking, the National Publicity Secretary of the association, Dr Ozuigbe Okonokhua stressed the need to examine every member of a family where Glaucoma is found.

Ekiti: House summons 25 ministries/ Govt agencies for audit queries
The Ekiti State House of Assembly has summoned heads of twenty-five Ministries and Government Agencies for receiving audit queries from the office of the State Auditor-General.
The Ministries and Agencies were queried for alleged non-remittance of returns on their financial transaction for 2007.
Those affected are the Government House, Protocol Department, the Office of the Deputy Governor, Ministry of Finance and Budget Office.
Others are the offices of the Accountant-General and the Secretary to the State Government.

Abuja: High Court summons past Gov of Kogi
An Abuja High Court in Gudu district has summoned the immediate past Governor of Kogi State, Alhaji Ibrahim Idris to appear in Court on Friday to answer to criminal charges against him.
The trial Judge, Justice A.M. Talba also ordered the Inspector General of Police, Mr. Mike Okiro to ensure that the summons was executed.
The order followed an application by a former Governor of Kogi State, Prince Abubakar Audu had given false information on the forms he submitted to INEC by stating that he attended Kings Commercial College, Buguma, an offence punishable under the Penal Code.
Attaching some documents and a disclaimer from the Kings College of Commerce, Buguma, Prince Audu prayed the court to summon the accused without conducting preliminary inquiry stressing that its was a direct complaint based on facts.

AMAC: Residents of Zone A protests over diversion of transformer
Abuja Municipal Area Council Residents Association Zone A has called on the AMAC Chairman to provide them with a transformer to hasten restoration of power supply in the area.
They made the call during a peaceful protest over the diversion of a transformer meant for the zone A residents of AMAC.
The residents carried placards with inscriptions like “we have stopped living in Abuja, we now live in the village” where is the transformer we applied for?
The Chairman of the AMAC Residents Association, Mr. Rotimi Adara however expressed confidence that the AMAC Chairman Mr. Zephaniah Jisalo would urgently address their plight.
In a reaction the information officer of AMAC, Mr. Charles Buba who promised their grievances would be communicated to the appropriate authority but declined comment on the diversion of the transformer.
Efforts to reach the AMAC Chairman Zephaniah Jisalo failed as he was said to be attending a meeting.

SADC in Abuja on a study of ECOWAS Agricultural policy
A delegation from Southern African Development Community arrives Abuja to undertake a study of ECOWAS Common Agricultural Policy, ECOWAP.
ECOWAP Policy was approved in 2005 by Heads of State and Government of ECOWAS as a mechanism for the co-ordinated development of agriculture in the region.
The Policy is targeted toward boosting agriculture in three major areas.
These are in the areas of production improved food availability, enhancing the competitiveness of regional agriculture, integrating markets for agric products and improving access to the international market.
The 14-member SADC is in the process of developing a similar policy for countries in its union.
The delegation will be briefed by ECOWAS officials including a consultant from the Food and Agricultural Organisation, FAO.

Iraq Presidency approves “Chemical Ali” death sentence
The death sentence passed on Saddam Hussen’s cousin and henchman, Hassan Al-majid has been approved by Iraqi Presidency.
Hassan Al-Majid popularly called “Chemical Ali” was condemned to death on genocide charges for killing one hundred thousand people during the 1988 Anfal campaign against the Kurds in Northern Iraq.
Chemical Ali was initially sentenced to death in June last year but legal wrangling held up the case.
BBC reports that the execution approved by the Iraqi presidency has to be carried out within thirty days.

Members of State Houses of Assembly from seventeen Southern States are to converge in Uyo to formulate the new methods of enhancing legislation.

Burial programmes for late Brigadier General Solomon Giwa-Amu have been released.
A statement from the Nigerian Army Headquarters says there will be funeral mass at the deceased’s residence CT4 Lobito Crescent Stallion Estate, Wuse 2, Abuja, today at 6 p.m.
The body will leave National Hospital for Holy Trinity Catholic Church Maitama, Abuja for requiem mass at 7.30 in the morning of Friday.
The body leaves for his home town Sabongidda Ora, Edo State after the Church Service.
This will be followed by lying in State at his residence, Sabongidda-Ora at 7pm.
Funeral Service comes up on Saturday at Saint John Anglican Church, Sabongidda Ora at ten in the morning to be followed by interment.

Buhari, Atiku reject judgement, head for Supreme Court
General Muhammadu Buhari in a sharp reaction to the tribunal judgement which upheld the election of Alhaji Umaru Musa Yar’Adua as President said, “For us it is semi-final. We are proceeding to the Supreme Court”.
In a similar vein, former Vice President, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar said, he has instructed his team of lawyers to file an appeal immediately at the Supreme Court.
He went further, “Today is an epochal and far reaching judgement, the Presidential Election Petitions Tribunal has in its own wisdom, decided that the charade called elections held in April last year was a fair representation of the free will of the Nigerian People”.
“Today’s judgement is not a decision against Atiku Abubakar or the Action Congress. No! It is the peace loving people of Nigeria who have lost.
In a contrary opinion, the Publicity Secretary of ANNPP, Mr Emma Eneukwu, said the party had accepted the judgement in good faith, because according to him, the judiciary has performed well so far.
He went further, “No party member can go on appeal without the party’s approval. The election has come and gone and we are happy about the outcome of the appeal at the tribunal”.
The Presidential election petitions tribunal on Tuesday dismissed the petitions filed by General Muhammadu Buhari of ANPP and Atiku Abubakar of AC challenging the election of Alhaji Umaru Musa Yar’Adua and Dr Goodluck Jonathan as President and Vice President respectively.
In a three hour judgement delivered by Justice John Atobi Fabiyi, the tribunal unanimously stated that the issues presented by the petitioners were not substantiated to warrant the nullification of the election.

The Presidential Election Petitions Tribunal sitting in Abuja on Tuesday upheld the election of Alhaji Umar Musa Yar’Adua and Dr Goodluck Jonathan as President and
Vice President respectively. In a three hour judgement delivered by Honourable Justice Fabiyi, the Tribunal noted that the issues presented by the petitioners, former Vice President, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, of Action Congress and General Muhammad Buhari of ANPP were not substantial to warrant the nullification of April 21st 2007, Presidential Election.
Reacting to the judgement, Chief Mike Ahamba SAN, representing General Muhammad Buhari, noted error in the Judgement and stated that he will appeal against the Judgement.

Head of Service calls for commitment from Customs/Immigration
The Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Ebele Okeke has called on the staff of the Customs, Immigration and Prisons Pension Office to show commitment in the discharge of their duties.
The Head of Service during a visit to the Office in Gwagwalada Abuja described the heap of files unattended to as a nightmare.

The Abia State Election Petition tribunal sitting in Umuahia has nullified the election of Governor Theodore Orji and his Deputy Mr. Chris Akoma for non resignation of their
appointments thirty days before contesting the Election and for failure of the Governor to deny being a member of the Okija Secret cult.
The tribunal subsequently declared the petitioner, Chief Onyema Ugochukwu of the PDP and his running mate Chief Chinwe Nwangaga as winners.

UNN holds 37th Convocation on Friday
The 37th Convocation of the University of Nigeria will hold on Friday, February 29, and Saturday, March 1, 2008, at the Margaret Ekpo Convocation Hall at the Nsukka Campus of the University.
Over six thousand graduands are expected to receive various classes of degrees, diplomas and certificates on the occasion.
A statement the Registrar of the University, Mr. Placid Dioka, says first degrees and diplomas will be awarded on Friday, February 29, while higher degrees and honorary degrees and diplomas will be awarded on Saturday, March 1, 2008.

DELTA: PDP Postpones Congress
A report from Delta State says yesterday’s ward congresses of the PDP did not take place.
Our correspondent, reports that this followed an incident in which the wife of the National Chairman of the Party, Chief Marian Ali and the National Monitoring were hold hostage at the state secretariat of the party.
Some protesters had alleged that the election materials from Abuja could not be produced by the monitoring team.

FG denies increase in electricity tariff
The Federal government says there are no plans to increase electricity tariff next month as being speculated.According to the Minister of State for Energy, Power, Mrs Fatima Ibrahim government only set machinery in nation for a multi year tariff order designed to facilitate the involvement of the private sector in building and expanding electricity infrastructure.
The Minister told Energy Correspondents in Abuja today that the proposed tariff order being processed with the involvement of all stakeholders, including the Nigerian masses, would provide a framework and the rules to be applied in determining and regulating future tariffs to be charged by independent power producers.
Mrs Fatima Ibrahim emphasised that government would not allow electricity consumers to be exploited as the proposed multi year tariff would provide for various subsidies.
On when the multi year tariff order would come into effect, Mrs Ibrahim explained that it would not be immediate as the National Assembly had to give it legal backing.
The Minister reassured Nigerians of government’s commitment to ensure stable efficient and affordable power supply through its various reforms in the sector.

Berti Vogts Resigns
The 61-yr old German - born head coach of the Super Eagles, Berti Vogts has resigned his appointment.
This is coming after the abysmal performance of the Super Eagles at the just concluded Nations Cup in Ghana.
In a statement, Vogts was quoted as saying “Too much happened during after the Nations Cup. Most of all I don’t have any faith in the Chairman of the Nigeria Football Association anymore, working together is no longer possible”.
Vogts biggest triumph was leading Germany to the 1996 European Championship title.
A host of former Nigerian Internationals among them, Daniel Amokachi, Sunday Oliseh and Stephen Keshi have made it clear, they are interested in the job.

APGA calls for commitment of Nigerians to electoral reforms
The All Progressive Grand Alliance, APGA has called on Nigerians to be committed to the Electoral Reform initiated by President Umar Yar’Adua.

Chief Okorie said his party was not in support of a call by the President of the Nigerian Bar Association, MBA, Mr. Olisa Agbakoba for a new body to be constituted to conduct the bye-election in Kogi State.

PCAEPI to deliver 6, 000 mega watts of electricity in 18 months
A Presidential Committee for the Accelerated Expansion of Nigeria’s Power Infrastructure to deliver six thousand additional mega watts of electricity in eighteen months has been set up.
A statement signed by the Special Adviser to the President on Communication, Mr. Olusegun Adeniyi explained that the committee was to give practical effect to President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua’s pledge to end the country’s long-running energy crisis within the shortest possible time.
The committee’s mandate also includes adding extra-11,000 megawatts of electricity by 2011 through diverse sources.
Members of the committee are Mr. Austine O. Ometoruwa, Alhaji Aliko Dangote, Mr. Lewis Tung, Mr. Cyril Odu, Mr. Kola Adesina, Mr. Atedo Peterside, and Mr. Abubakar Lawal Yar’Adua.
Others include Mr. Tanimu Yakubu, Mr. Joseph Makoju and Dr. Rowlan Owan who serves as its Secretary.
The terms of reference of the committee are to conduct an independent technical, financial and legal audit of infrastructure in Nigeria’s power sector.
They are also to provide inputs for the design of an appropriate structure to attract credible investors to the power sector.
The Committee is expected to submit an interim report to President Yar’Adua within thirty days.
Its inputs are expected to be a vital component of the state of emergency to be declared by President Yar Adua in the power sector.

FG revokes sale NITEL/MTEL to Transcorp
The National Association of Telecommunications Employees has described the revocation of the sale of NITEL and MTEL to Transcorp as a big relief.
Speaking with newsmen in Abuja, the National President of the Association Comrade Charles Amankwe said the Federal Government’s decision was in the best interest of Nigerians.
On the alleged threat by the defunct management of Transcorp to seek redress in court, comrade Amankwe described it as a welcome development.

Brigadier General Giwa-Amu dies in Auto crash
Army Spokesman, Brigadier General Solomon Giwa-Amu is dead.
He died on Monday from injuries sustained in a car crash on the Abuja-Kaduna highway.
The Chie of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Luka Yusuf confirmed the death of the Army Director of Public Relations.
A statement issued by Lieutenant Colonel Muhammed Yerima on behalf of the Chief of Army Staff said the accident occurred in the early hours of Monday.
Brigadier General Giwa-Amu was on his way to deliver a lecture at the Command and Staff College, Jaji, Kaduna State.
Late Giwa Amu was the first Aide-de-camp to former President Olusegun Obasanjo up to 2004 before proceeding to USA on appointment as military attaché to Nigeria’s permanent mission to the United Nations.

UN establishes new fund for maternal health
The United Nations Population Fund has established a new fund for maternal health to boost global efforts at reducing morbidity and mortality among woman during pregnancy and childbirth.
A statement by the Fund said it would focus on supporting seventy-five million Dollars from this year to 2011.
The Fund, established in collaboration with governments, UN organisations and other International partners, is to assist countries to increase their access and ensure of quality maternal health.

Obasanjo advocates dialogue over PDP crisis
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has advocated dialogue as a way of resolving the current intra-party crisis within the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.
Chief Obasanjo who was speaking with newsmen in Benin City, the Edo State capital after a meeting with leaders of the PDP in the State also disclosed that his emergence as the Board of Trustee Chairman of the PDP was a constitutional matter.
He said that as somebody who believed in the Constitution, his return for the same position the second time would still be based on the constitution.
The Board Chairman of the PDP admitted that there were dissenting voices in the Party and submitted that such was the beauty of Democracy.

Gombe Govt signs MOU with FRCN
A Memorandum of Understanding, MOU, has been signed by the Gombe State Government and the Federal
Radio Corporation of Nigeria FRCN,for the construction of a befitting Federal FM Station in Gombe State.The MOU was signed on Friday when the Gombe State Governor, Alhaji Danjuma Goje, paid a visit to the Director General of FRCN, Mr Ben Egbuna in Abuja.
Alhaji Danjuma Goje, who said the idea was borne out of the need to provide adequate services to the people, also observed a tremendous improvement on FRCN’s programmes.
He also urged the Management of FRCN to fully equip its Kaduna Network studio to enable it to meet the demands of the masses.
Responding the Director General of the FRCN, Mr Ben Egbuna said with the support of the State Government, the new Station would be commissioned before the end of the year.
Mr Egbuna spoke on the state of Kaduna National Station. Mr Ben Egbuna said that an Education service transmitter would soon be installed in Kaduna.

Kano Govt. to assist Nigerian Law School
The Kano State Government has pledged to intervene in the provision of infrastructure at the Kano Campus of the Nigerian Law School, Bagauda to enhance learning activities.
Governor Ibrahim Shekaraku made the pledge when he received the management of the school on a courtesy visit in his office in Kano.
He said that the State Government would construct a female hostel and provide other facilities at the school.
Also, the representative of the Chairman of the Nigerian Bar association, Hajiya Fatima Kwaku expressed displeasure over the State of the Campus and appealed for Government intervention to save the situation.

Mark advocates harmonious Govt/Labour relationship
The Senate President David Mark has advocated harmonious Government/Labour relationship to ensure the attainment of democracy dividends.
Addressing the Executive members of the NLC in Abuja at an interactive session, Senator Mark advised all stakeholders to embrace dialogue over the July 2008 deadline on the pricing of petroleum products.
The Senate President however made it clear that increase in petroleum prices was not necessary now as it would aggravate the plight of the ordinary citizens.
He said the Senate would do every thing within its legislative power to find a lasting solution to the issue.
The President of the NLC, Comrade Abdulwaheed Omar, said the Congress would ensure the sustenance of the agreed prices of petroleum products beyond June 2008.
He urged the Senate to amend the road maintenance bill to reduce the people’s suffering.

FG approves Nigeria Gas Infrastructure Master Plan
The First Nigerian Gas Infrastructure Master plan has been approved by the Federal Executive Council.
Briefing newsmen at the end of an extra ordinary meeting of the council held on Wednesday in Abuja, the Minister of Information and Communications, Mr John Odey, said the policy was targeted at addressing the country’s energy challenges.
Correspondent reports that the master plan is coming immediately after the gas pricing and domestic supply regulation, recently approved by the President.

Kogi: Acting Gov reappoints past commissioners
In Kogi State all the Commissioners inherited from the immediate past administration of Governor Ibrahim Idris have been reappointed and sworn-in by the acting Governor,
Mr. Clarence Olafemi.
Also sworn-in were all the Special Advisers who served under the Idris administration.
On the occasion the acting Governor said his action was a demonstration of his confidence in the officials to work for the success of the transition process in the State.

Modalities have been put in place to ensure early implementation of the new Teachers Salary Structure.
The Minister of Education, Dr Igwe Aja-Nwachukwu, told Executive members of the Nigeria Union of Teachers who paid him a courtesy call in Abuja that it was important to uplift teachers to ensure optimum performance from them.
In a remark, the NUT Deputy National President, Chief Unem Nelson urged the Federal Government to expedite action on the implementation of the new salary structure for teachers.

Ibadan: son stabs mother to death
A middle-aged woman has allegedly been stabbed to death by her son, Jamiu Akinola after a dose of marijuana.
The Police Commissioner in Oyo State, Mr Udom Ekpo-Udom, made this known in Ibadan while parading suspected criminals before newsmen.
Mr Ekpo-Udom said Jamiu stabbed his mother with a dagger in the chest because of her incessant advice to him to stop smoking Indian hemp.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, when Policemen got to the scene of the crime, they found the woman in a pool of blood with the dagger beside her.
The Police boss said the suspect has been arrested and would soon be charged to court.

Imo Govt to support farmers in rice production
It is now profitable to invest in rice production in Imo state without regrets as the State government has promised to mop up excess rice to support farmers in the production of the staple food.
According to the state commissioner for Agriculture, Chief Longinus Anyanwu the objective is to empower the farmers who lacked the capacity to process the high yielding NERICA rice breed which was recently introduced in the state.
He told Kapital FM that the state had been divided into nine rice zones to actualise its plans of commercialising the production of rice in the state.
The Commissioner also noted that the plans of the present state administration to revive the palm plantations in the state had started yielding results.
He said, about one million palm tree seedlings are expected to be ready for plantation before the end of the year.
Chief Anyanwu also noted that there was a new livestock policy to revive the livestock sector.
The commissioner however appealed to the states of the federation on time to boost production.

FG to phase out Ozone depleting substances by 2010
Arrangements have been concluded by the Federal government to phase out the use of Ozone depleting substances in the country by January 2010.
Dr David Bola Omotosho, National Programme Coordinator for Ozone programme implementation and management unit stated this in an interview with Radio Nigeria in Abuja.
He said Nigeria has done a lot in the implementation of Montréal protocol which focused on substances that deplete the Ozone layer.
Dr Bola Omotosho also explained the concept of R12 substances and R22 which have the potential of depleting the Ozone layer.
According to Dr Omotosho, it is now a well-established fact that some widely used man-made chemicals are destroying the stratospheric layers which shield the Earth from dangerous ultraviolet radiation from the Sun.
He emphasised that the depletion of the layer would have grave consequences for human health, food production systems and ultimately for the entire earth system.
The Montreal protocol which came into force in January 1989 provides a legal basis to the worldwide effort to safeguard the Ozone layer.

EU provides 20m Euros to support Nigeria’s polio eradication
The European Union, EU, on Friday announced the provision of additional grant of twenty million Euros to support Nigeria’s intensified polio eradication efforts.
The EU Ambassador, Robert Vander Meulen said the gesture was an agreement between the Nigerian government, the World Health Organisation and the European Commission.
Ambassador Meulen said the twenty million Euro grant came on top of previous grants by the Commission for polio eradication which amounted to sixty million Euros since 2001.
According to him, these investments have substantially decreased the incidence of polio in Nigeria.
The WHO country Representative, Dr Peter Eriki said the latest contribution is part of the intensified efforts in eradicating polio especially in high risk areas.
According to Dr Eriki, the incidence of the most dangerous strain-type 1 polio virus has been slashed by ninety per cent.
The Minister of Health, Professor Adenike Grange said it was a commendable landmark for the country.
Correspondent reports that the progress achieved in polio eradication over the past the past two months is a shining example of what can be achieved in the spirit of international partnership.

Osadebe’s remains committed to mother earth
Highlife maestro, Chief Osita Osadebe is being buried in his Atani home in Ogbaru Local Government Area of Anambra State.
Aged seventy-one, Chief Osadebe died in May last year in the United States after a protracted illness.
Chief Osadebe, described in his lifetime as King of Highlife promoted Nigeria’s image, culture and rich traditional heritage abroad through his music.
He recorded more than two hundred and fifty albums in his lifetime and in 1975, got his first gold disc award for his album entitled “Osadebe 75”.
Chief Osadebe is survived by wives, children and grandchildren.

Yar’Adua approves new National Gas Pricing Policy
A new National Gas Pricing Policy and Regulations aimed at ensuring short and long term gas availability, at affordable prices, has been approved by President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua.
Under the policy Nigeria’s gas will be supplied at the lowest commercially sustainable prices to the domestic sector which provides electricity for residential and commercial users.
State House Correspondent reports that the two new policy documents are also expected to boost the pace of industrial development in the country by ensuring competitive gas prices.

Agip Company to appear before Delta House of Assembly
Following a protest by its host community, the management of the Agip Oil Company is to appear before the Delta State House of Assembly next Wednesday.
Representatives of Odimodi Community in Burutu Local Government Area had told the Assembly Committee on Environment in Asaba that the oil company failed to fully clean up the environment following an oil spill in November last year which contaminated the community’s source of potable water and acquatic life.
According to their spokesman Mr Osteen Igbapite the company also failed to fulfil its agreement with the community in the implementation of welfare programmes.
The Chairman, Delta State House of Assembly Committee, Mrs Omawumi Udoh while urging the community to maintain the peace explained that the invitation to the oil company was to settle the matter.

House hails nullification of Kogi Gov election

Thave described the nullification of the election of Governor Ibrahim Idris of Kogi State as the rule of law in action.
The Court of Appeal yesterday upheld the decision of the Kogi State Election Petitions Tribunal annulled the election of Governor Ibrahim Idris.
Reacting to the judgement, some of the lawmakers told the News Agency of Nigeria – NAN – in Abuja that the judgement had further confirmed that the rule of law now existed in the country.
The Representative of Ogun, Mr Isiaka Akinlade, expressed satisfaction that there was no vacuum in the state as the Speaker of the State Assembly had been sworn-in as acting Governor in line with the constitution.
The member applauded the judiciary, saying that it had restored the people’s faith in the Judicial system.
Mrs Abike Dabiri – AC-Lagos – said that the judgement had confirmed that there were some fundamental flaws in the conduct of the 2007 general elections.

Today marks the beginning of lent for Christians all over the world. It is known as Ash Wednesday.
In many Churches, Special Services will be held during which worshippers will be marked with ashes as a symbol of death, sorrow and sin.
This practice draws from ancient biblical traditions of covering one’s head with ashes, wearing sackcloth and fasting during critical moments.
The ashes used on this day are obtained from burnt palm fronds used on the Palm Sunday of the previous year.

It also marks the forty days and forty nights of fasting embarked on by Jesus Christ before his trials, death and resurrection.

Corps NSCDC Mohammed Lawal has advised seventy newly recruited officers to be diligent and law abiding.

Mark describes refusal to compensate oil spills victims as inhuman
Senate President, David Mark has described
as inhuman and unacceptable the refusal of Oil Companies to compensate victims of Oil spills.
Senator Mark stated this in response to complaints by the Akwa Ibom State Cooperative Fishery Association about the failure of Oil Company to pay compensation for farmlands and fish ponds destroyed in the area by Oil spills.
The Senate President urged the affected people to remain law abiding and promised that the Senate would address the matter.
The leader of the Association, Elder Jeremiah Essien, said that Oil spills occurred in 1998, 2000, 2002 and 2003 at Eket, Ibeno, Ikot Abasi, Eastern Obolo, Nsit Eket, Oron Onna, and Itu Local Government Areas.

Recent report on measles, cholera gives Minister concern
The report of the recent measles, laser fever
and cholera in parts of the country is giving the Minister of Health, Professor Adenike Grange, serious concern.
Various state of the federation have reported the outbreak of their diseases in the last eight to twelve weeks.
In a statement in Abuja, relevant laboratories under the supervision of the Federal Ministry of Health and Works Health Organization have confirmed these diseases.
Meanwhile, a team of experts have been dispatched to the affected areas to determine the extent of the outbreak and initiate preventive and containment measures in the communities affected.
One of the affected areas, and where the Minister of Health, Professor Grange conducted on the sport assessment is, Zaria in Kaduna State.
Reports say most of the outbreaks are seen in areas where vaccination programmes were rejected.

Court adjourns case on attempted murder of DG NAFDAC
An FCT High Court has adjourned to the 27th
of March to continue hearing in the case of attempted murder of the Director-General of NAFDAC, Professor Dora Akunyili.
Justice Ishaku Bello explained that he had an appeal before the Supreme Court to attend to.
At the resumed hearing, none of the eight accused persons were in Court.
Justice Bello warned that if they are still not present at the next sitting he would raise appeal for judgement.
Counsel to the 8th accused persons, Mr Max Ogar had during the session prayed the Court to hold that the Court of Appeal had jurisdiction to hear the matter.
The Appeal Court had directed the Abuja High Court which struck out the case saying it had no jurisdiction on the matter to hear it.

Lagos PDP protests removal of Williams as Chairman
A group which claims to be Chief Gamel Owolabi
led faction of the PDP in Lagos State on Monday staged a protest at the National Secretariat of the Party in Abuja calling for the removal of Chief Bayo Williams as the Chairman of the Party in the State.
The Assistant Publicity Secretary of the faction, Mr Sunday Olayifa in an interview said the only way to save PDP in Lagos from losing its members to other Parties was for the National Secretariat to constitute a Committee to look into the crisis.
Mr Olayifa said Chief Williams was imposed as the Lagos Chairman of the Party by the Party’s South-West Chairman, Chief Bode George and does not represent the interests of members in the State.
In a swift reaction, Chief Bode George said the group was only acting for those who do not have the interest of the Party at heart. Chief George said he was not the Chairman of the Party in the State and had no business in the running of its affairs.

FCT: Minister inaugurates 9member C’ttee on ship repairs
A nine-member Ministerial Committee on Ship
repairs and maintenance has been inaugurated.
At the ceremony in Abuja, the Minster of State, Water Transportation, Prince John Okechukwu, said time had come for the implementation of the Coastal and inland Shipping Act popularly known as Cabotage regime.
Prince Okechukwu expressed the belief that this would go a long way in assisting Nigeria Shipping Companies to own, operate vessels and participate effectively in the nation’s Sea-born trade.
The Minister explained that in line with this, the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, NIMASA, had to create a fund for shipping development.
According to Prince Okechukwu, the Maritime sector had the potential of being the second highest foreign exchange earner for the country.
While speaking on behalf of his members, the Chairman of the Committee, who is also the Director-General of NIMASA, Dr. Ade Dosunmu, said one of the objectives of NIMASA was to assist local operators partake in cargo business which is presently dominated by foreign operators.
The terms of reference of the Committee included identifying conditions for accessing ship repairs and maintenance.

Supreme Court orders Iwu to answer questions at the Tribunal
The Supreme Court has ordered that the Chairman
of the Independent Electoral Commission, Professor Maurice Iwu should answer some fundamental questions pertaining to the last Presidential election at the Tribunal.
The Apex Court which granted in parts the first appeal of the Presidential candidate of the Action Congress, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, however turned down this request that the President Yar’Adua and Vice President Goodluck Jonathan be made to provide further information on the Election.
The Court held that this was not necessary as the Respondents did not conduct the election but were only candidates in the exercise.
Alhaji Atiku had appealed against the verdict of the Tribunal which ordered that it was not necessary to subject Professor Iwu to interrogation as that would further prolong the hearing of the matter.
