Abia: Journalists to give hope to the younger generation

Journalists in the country have been charged to give hope to the younger generation by setting the right agenda that would showcase the national pride of Nigeria.

The Abia State Director, National Orientation Agency, Mrs. Ngozi Uduma made the call during an interactive session organized by the State Catholic Media Workers Association of Nigeria in Umuahia to mark the World’s Communication Day.

She noted that though the society was in disarray the powerful effect of the media if channelled properly could go a long way in achieving the needed revitalization.

Also contributing to the discussion a Professor with the Ahmadu Bello University Professor Ebenezer Ndukwe advised the media to know that they are the ombudsman between the government and society and urged them to still improve on the good work they had done so far.

A lecturer at the Abia State University , Mr. Onwuka Okereke however maintained that the media profession was unlike no other, as it involved a dual role of providing public service and remaining in business. He called on professionals to come together and establish their own media house that would be free from unnecessary interference.

On the way forward for the profession the chairman of the occasion and Special Media Adviser to the Enugu State governor, Mr. Vinmartin Ilo and a director in the Abia State Ministry of Information Mr. Nathan Harbour said the media practitioners must be more responsible.

Earlier during a church service that preceded the interaction the Catholic Bishop of Umuahia, the Most Reverend Lucius Ugorji called on the media to avoid projecting issues that are destructive to societal values such as pornography, cloning, same sex marriage and abortion.

Correspondent reports that the event drew participants from all works of life including the government and the academia.
