CDF to assist Nigerian Importers & Exporters
The Board of the Cargo Defence Fund, CDF, has been inaugurated in Abuja with a mandate to assist Nigerian Importers and Exporter in the pursuit of their claims
recoveries and legal remedies during cargo mishap on transit.
The thirteen-member Board is expected to look into how to improve the resources of the Fund, invest and manage the fund prudently to ensure prompt and easy settlement of claims.
It has as its Chairman, Captain Cosmos Niagwam.
In a speech, the Minister of State, Water Transportation, Prince John Okechuwku Emeka, said the Board would to act as a link between the Cargo Defence Fund, the Nigerian shippers’ Council and the Government.

Mark sympathizes with people of Katsina over minister’s death
Senate President David Mark has condoled with the government and people of Katsina State over the death, of the First Republic Minister of Trade and Commerce, Ambassador Usman Ladan Baki.
Ambassador Usman Ladan Baki died in a fatal motor accident while traveling to Abuja.
Senate President David Mark who paid a condolence visit to the Emir of Katsina, Alhaji Abdulmumini Kabir, urged the Emir to accept the death of Ambassador Baki as the wish of God.
Senator Mark later visited the family house of the late Usman Ladan Baki to condole members of the family.

EFCC arrests Two former Ministers of Aviation
Two former Ministers of Aviation, Professor Babalola Borishade and Chief Femi Fani-kayode were on Monday arrested by men of the EFCC after testifying before the senate
public hearing on the application of the Nineteen point five billion Naira aviation intervention fund released by the Federal Government in 2006.
Also arrested alongside the two former Minister was the Managing Director of the National Airspace Management Agency, NAMA, Mr. Roland Iyayi who had earlier testified.
The former Ministers were said to have been picked up at the lobby of the National Assembly Complex shortly after appearing before the Senate Committee on Aviation Public hearing.

Multi-National Companies to spend $25m on exploration of coal in Nigeria
Two multi-national companies are to spend twenty five million Dollars on the exploration and utilization of coal for power generation in Nigeria.
The Minister of Mines and Steel Development, Chief Sarafa Tunji-Ishola told newsmen in Abuja that this was part of efforts to diversify the nation’s power generation sources.
The Minister explained that the Federal Government was determined to ensure rapid socio-economic development through the diversification of the nation’s economy.
Chief Ishola reaffirmed that the Mining and Steel Sector had the potential to ensure the growth of the Nigerian economy.
Correspondent reports that seven strategic minerals are being considered to realize the goal.
The minerals are Zinc, Coal, Bitumen and Gold. Others include Iron-Ore, Limestone and Barites.

Two Independent Power Projects for Delta State
Two Independent Power Project are to be sited in Delta State.
This is part of efforts by the State Government to ensure the smooth implementation of its industrialization policy under which industrial parks are to be created in various parts of the State.
Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan told Radio Nigeria in Asaba that the power projects with a joint capacity of eight hundred megawatts would be sited in two of the senatorial districts of the State.
Already, Governor Uduaghan said that the proposals made by the State Government on the utilization of gas for the projects had been included in the National Gas master plan policy of the Federal Government Territory.
In his contribution, the State Commissioner for Power and Energy, Mr. Ovuozurie Macaulay explained that the State Government adopted the option of using generators to power its mulit-million naira street lights in Warri and Asaba because of unstable public power supply and ineffective solar power technology.
Mr. Macaulay maintained that the State Government would continue to use generator to power the street lights as long as it would assist in exposing the activities of criminals from dusk to dawn.

Science education is crucial to the country’s development – Yar’Adua
President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua says science education is crucial to the country’s development.
President Yar’Adua told a Team of Academic Laureates and Athletes from the Nigerian Turkish Colleges at the State House that the greatest contribution anybody or institution could make to the society was in the area of education.
He commended the Nigerian Turkish International Colleges for giving priority to science education and exposing the students at such young ages to compete at the international level with students from other countries.
President Yar’Adua, who expressed satisfaction for the international academic feat achieved by the Nigerian students, said that the activities of the College had also contributed to improving Nigerian-Turkish relations.
Earlier the principal of the college, Mr. Kamil Kemanci, who presented the students to President Yar’Adua, said that the Olympiad students of the Nigerian Turkish Colleges had won over 64 laurels at the international level for Nigeria in the past ten years of the existence of the colleges in the country.
In another development, President Yar’Adua also met with the out-going Venezuelan Ambassador to Nigeria, Dr. Boris Henrique Martinez, at the Aso Rock villa Abuja
The President told the envoy that he looked forward to meeting his Venezuelan counterpart, President Hugo Chavez, soon to discuss the current global energy situation as well as lay a framework for enhanced bilateral relations.

Election Petition Tribunal upholds election of Senator Yisah Braimah
The election of Senator Yisah Braimah representing Edo North Senatorial District in the National Assembly has been upheld by the Election Petition Tribunal in Benin City.
Reading the four hour judgement, Justice Muktar Joshua said the petitioners failed because they were unable to prove their allegations beyond reasonable doubt.
Upholding the election, the tribunal noted that contrary to the allegations by the petitioners, the respondents have been able to prove that elections into the National Assembly were held in the Edo North Senatorial District and was peaceful, free and fair.
In a related development, the Justice Peter Umeadi led tribunal has nullified the election of Senator Ehigie Uzamere representing Edo South Senatorial District in the National Assembly.
While calling for fresh election within ninety days, the tribunal also ordered the INEC to withdraw the certificate of returns earlier issued him.

NIS commences the issuance of e-passport
The Nigeria Immigration Service has commenced the Issuance of the e-passport in Nigeria’s embassies and high commissions abroad.
In a statement, Nigeria’s high Commissioner in the United Kingdom Dr. Dalhatu Tafida called on Nigerians to see the e-passport as an instrument that would improve the image of Nigeria.
The Comptroller-General of immigration, Mr. Chukwurah Udeh said that the e-passport had successfully addressed the issue of identity theft.
The statement adds that four hundred and seventy thousand e-passports has so far been issued at the twenty-two passport issuing centres in the country.

Today is World International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Drug Trafficking.
It is a day set aside by the United Nations General Assembly as part of its resolutions to proclaim the socio-economic consequences of drug abuse.

Youths to be vanguard of rule of law - Aondoakaa
Youths in the country have been urged to be at the vanguard of the rule of law as championed by this administration to attain meaningful national development.
In a statement, the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Chief Michael Aondoakaa said youths hold the key to the survival and lasting development of any nation and should therefore take a positive stand on national issues.
The statement notes in particular the contribution of youths in the struggle and attainment of independence in South Africa, Namibia and Mozambique.

Ebonyi & Benue commit to the resolution of 98yr old border conflict
Two communities in Ebonyi and Benue States have expressed their commitment to the resolution of the ninety-eight year old border conflict that has engulfed them.
The communities, Agila in Benue and Ngbo in Ebonyi States met in Abuja under the auspices of the Institute for Peace and Conflict Resolution and the Justice, Development and Peace Commission of the Catholic Church.
In a remark, Chairman, Group of Co-ordinators for the Commission, Reverend Father Bernard Asogo said the mediation was initiated to adopt practical ways of ending the conflict.
A community leader from Agila, Mr. Otogba Unogwu and the Ebonyi State Commissioner for Border Security and Conflict Resolution, Agwu Okpani, in separate interview said they were optimistic of an end to the crisis.
Earlier, the Director-General of Institute for Peace and Conflict Resolution, Dr. Joseph Golwa, who noted that almost every State in the country had a border problem, called on affected communities to adopt dialogue in resolving such disputes.
The representatives of the National Boundary Commission were also present at the mediation.

Peace Corps of Nigeria ends retreat, supports FG on amnesty to militants
The Peace Corps of Nigeria has ended its four day retreat designed to take stock of the organisations activities and initiate policies that will reposition it.
In a communiqué, the Corps says it supports the recent declaration by the Federal Government to grant amnesty to any militant who is willing to drop arms and follow the path of peace.
The Corps called for continuous dialogue between the government and the militants for a lasting peace in the Niger Delta region.
The National Commandant of the Peace Corps of Nigeria, Mr Dickson Ako said restoring regular power supply would attract foreign investors which would in the long run create job opportunities for unemployed Nigerians.
Mr Ako charged the state commands of the Peace Corps to respect constituted authorities and carryout their activities in accordance with the constitution of the Corps.
Correspondent reports that the Peace Corps of Nigeria’s Retreat was attended by fifteen members of the National Executive Council of the Corps.

Taraba: House Speaker denies being under arrest by the Police
The Speaker of the Taraba State House of Assembly, Hon. Barr. Haruna Istifanus Gbana has denied claims that he is under arrest by the Police.
The Special Adviser to the Speaker, Mallam Tanko Doka made the denial while briefing newsmen.
Mallam Tanko stressed that the Speaker had done nothing to warrant any arrest.
He was of the opinion that the information being circulated about the arrest was aimed at tarnishing the image of the Speaker, destabilised the cordial working relation between the Executive and Legislative arms of the state government.
Mallam Doka however admitted that the Police are investigating a petition written against the Speaker by an AC candidate Mr Ali Yakubu Emmanuel of an allegation that the Speaker was in possession of multiple voter’s registration cards and declaration of age.

Ondo State Govt distributes science equipment to schools
The Ondo State government has distributed science equipment and mathematics training kits valued at twenty million Naira to twenty secondary schools and five technical colleges.
The Commissioner for Education, Dr. Olu Akinkoye, said teachers had also been trained on the use of kits.
Akinkoye said the training of the science teachers and distribution of equipments were part of government’s determination to encourage the teaching of science and mathematics in secondary schools.
Mr. Akinkoye stated that government was also committed to ensuring that secondary school students were computer literate and had distributed five computers and generators to each of the three hundred public secondary schools.
The Commissioner advised students in the schools to develop interest in science and
technical education, as it was the only way to attain technological development.

Ghanaian Minister counsels ECOWAS Heads to engage in collective bargaining
The Ghanaian Foreign Minister, Mr. Ojei Adjei says ECOWAS Heads of State and Government should engage in collective bargaining to ensure even development in the West African Sub-region.
Interacting with newsmen on arrival in Abuja for the 34th ECOWAS Heads of State Summit, Mr. Adjei said that collective efforts would enable the Sub-region to develop a sound economic base to suppress neo-colonization.
He spoke on some of the achievements of ECOWAS since its inception in 1975.
Welcoming the Ghanaian Minister, the Minister of Information and Communications, Mr. John Odey, said the Summit would address pressing issues concerning the sub-region.
Mr. Odey advised Nigerians to accord the visitors the desired respect and hospitality in the spirit of true African brotherhood.

FG condemns attack on the Bonga Oil Field
The Federal Government has condemned attack on the Bonga Oil Field operated by the Shell Petroleum Development Company.
Briefing State house correspondents at the Aso Rock villa, the Special Adviser to the President on Communications Olusegun Adeniyi said President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua has directed the Armed Forces and security agencies to take all necessary action to apprehend the perpetrators of this latest act of national sabotage and bring them to justice.
He said the President has further directed that security be beefed up at all oil facilities and installations in the Niger Delta to forestall further acts of terrorism by criminal elements in the region.
In another development, President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua has expressed appreciation to the leadership of the National Assembly for the cooperation extended to the Executive arm of the Government.
At an audience granted to current and former presiding officers of the National Assembly at State House, President Yar’Adua said he would be glad to host a bi-annual meeting with all past and present presiding officers of the National Assembly, where issues of national relevance could be extensively discussed.
President Yar’Adua expressed concern at the absence of an enabling law providing for the entitlements of former presiding officers of the National Assembly, and requested that the relevant bills passed by the two Chambers be submitted for his assent.
He also directed that action be taken to accord due recognition to former presiding officers during national engagements.
Earlier, Senator Anyim Pius Anyim, who spoke on behalf of the Current and Former Presiding Officers, had requested President Yar’Adua to sign into law, the bill providing for their entitlements, similar to the provisions for the Executive and Judiciary.

The World marks Refugee Day
June 20th every year is World Refugee Day. A day set aside to reflect on the plight of refugees world-wide.
Part of the activities lined up for the day in Nigeria includes special prayers by Christians and Moslems, Radio and Television Programmes, as well as a novelty match between the Sierra Leonian and Liberian refugees at the Oru Camp.
The Commissioner, National Commission for Refugees, Hajiya Hadiza Kangiwa explained the significance of the day.
According to Hajiya Kangiwa, refugees and internally displaced persons were victims of conflicts and natural disasters.

Electoral Reforms C’ttee to fashion out credible electoral system
Far reaching recommendations that will meet the aspirations of Nigerians will be given consideration by the Electoral Reforms Committee.
A member of the committee Professor Bolaji Akinyemi at the commencement of the committee’s sitting in Kano said the decision to hold the public hearings all over the country was to enable Nigerians contribute towards fashioning out a credible electoral system.
According to him, the Executive, as well as the National, State Houses of Assembly had a great role to play in the amendment of relevant laws for the attainment of the desired results.
Most of those who spoke at the forum advocated complete autonomy for INEC, scrapping of State Independent Electoral Commission as well as the adoption of option A4 in future elections in the country.

NUT gives FG seven days to implement the Teachers Salary Structure
The Nigeria Union of Teachers, NUT, has given the Federal Government seven days to implement the Teachers Salary Structure and issue circular to States and Local Governments to follow suit.
This is the outcome of a National Executive Council meeting held in Abuja.
In a Communiqué, the National Deputy President of NUT, Comrade Onem Nelson Onem pointed out that the salary structure was approved since 2003 after a twelve year struggle by the Association.
Earlier in an interview, the President of the Nigerian Union of Teachers and also the President, of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Comrade Abdulwaheed Omar said the Union wanted to do away with long term negotiation especially at the State and Local Government levels as experienced in salary increase in the past.
The teachers also want the Minister of Labour, Dr. Hassan Lawal not to register an offshoot from the Union known as the Association of Secondary School Teachers, which they said was illegal.
The teachers will reconvene on Tuesday next week to strategise on the way forward.

ECOWAS-China Economic and Trade Forum to hold in Beijing
An ECOWAS – China Economic and Trade Forum is scheduled for September this year in Beijing.
Already, a Chinese Trade delegation is on tour of three countries in West Africa including Nigeria.
Addressing newsmen after a meeting with the Chinese delegation, the Vice President of ECOWAS Commission, Mr. Jean de Dieu Somda said the cooperation between ECOWAS and China was being re-invigorated through the Economic Forum.
Mr. Somda remarked that West Africa had a lot of products to send to China.
On his part, the Head of the Chinese Trade Delegation, Mr. Dong Souggen expressed China’s willingness to assist the West African sub-region in the areas of telecommunication, energy and transportation.
The President of the African Business Round Table, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur who was part of the discussion said a conducive environment should be created for West Africa to learn from Chinese technology.
Alhaji Bamanga also urged China to set up industries in Africa instead of importing finished products.

President NIPR bemoans the set backs of the “Heart of Africa” project
The President, Nigeria Institute of Public Relations, NIPR, Professor Ike Nwosu has attributed the set backs of the “Heart of Africa” project to the non-inclusion of indigenous public relations professionals.
Professor Nwosu said the project though a noble idea had not done enough to reposition the reputation of the country as a focused and leading African nation.
The nation’s image laundering project tagged “Heart of Africa” was introduced in 2004 by former Minister of Information, Chief Chukwuemeka Chikelu.
The Nigerian Institute of Public Relations is to establish new training centres in thirty-one states of the Federation.
Professor Nwosu who gave the information in Abuja stated that the plan was to complement the existing six centres in the country.

US Govt donates security body scanning machine to the NDLEA
The U.S government has donated a Sorter RS security body scanning machine to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, for intensified fight against drug trafficking.
Donating the equipment at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja, the U.S. Ambassador to Nigeria, Miss. Robin Sanders, said the gesture was part of the U.S. support to Nigeria.
Miss Sanders said the U.S. government had earlier donated three of such equipment for installation in the three international airports in the country.
The ambassador said that the purchase and installation of the four scanners as well as manpower training on their use cost over one point two million dollars.
She said the security scanner would detect all foreign materials on or inside the human body.

LCBC applauds Nigeria over Provision of $5.5m for Inter-Basin Water Transfer
The Lake Chad Basin Commission has applauded Nigeria for providing the sum of five-point-five-two million dollars
out of six million dollars required for the feasibility studies of the Inter-Basin Water Transfer from Oubangi river of the Congo Basin to Lake Chad.
The Executive Secretary of the Commission, Alhaji Sanni Adamu gave the commendation at the opening of the extraordinary meeting of the Council of Ministers of the Commission in Abuja.
Alhaji Sanni said the meeting has to adopt a four year work plan costing about ten million dollars.
Representing President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua on the occasion, the Minister of State for Agriculture and Water Resources, Dr Ademola Seriki called for fresh commitment and policies in tackling the issue of resuscitating Lake Chad Basin among member States.
Dr Ademola Seriki who is also the Chairman of Lake Chad Basin Commission Councils of Ministers said the problem of Lake Chad Basin are increased poverty, loss of habitats and high annual increase in ecological refugees amongst others.

Reactions trail the death of Lamidi Adedibu
Meanwhile Prominent Nigerians have been reacting to his death.
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has described Chief Lamidi Adedibu as a “titan in politics”.
He told the News Agency of Nigeria in a telephone interview that Adedibu’s place and role would be difficult to fill.
Also reacting, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr. Dimeji Bankole said Adedibu was a grassroot politician.
Me. Bankole stated that Adedibu was a loyal party man whose style of politics attracted to him many friend and foes.

Rep calls FG to ensure justice over Osamuhi Murder
The House of Representatives wants the Federal Government to compel the Spanish Government to ensure that justice is done on the gruesome murder of Osamuhi Aputanyi.
The Edo born Osamuhi was allegedly killed by Spanish Security Agents a year ago.
Briefing National Assembly Correspondents, the Deputy Chairman of the House Committee on Human Rights, Mr Samson Osagie said the manner in which the Spanish government had so far handled the matter posed a concern to the legislators.
Mr Osagie stated that both forensic and post-mortem examinations on the deceased had proved that he died of strangulation.
He said the legislature was determined to follow the matter to a logical conclusion.
Mr Osagie stressed the need for Nigeria to pursue it’s foreign policy of citizenship diplomacy to ensure more protection on its citizens abroad.
National Assembly Correspondent quotes Mr Osagie as saying that the intervention of the legislators spared about sixty Nigerians in Spain, from being repatriated.

Nigeria marks World Environment Day
Nigeria today joins the rest of the world to celebrate World Environment Day.
The day is set aside by the United Nations to stimulate peoples awareness on the environment.
The theme for this years celebration is “kick the habit towards a low carbon economy”.
In an interview with Radio Nigeria, the Minister of Environment, and Housing Hajiya Halima Tayo Alao spoke on the significance of the day.
Hajiya Halima Tayo Alao also pointed out that the state of the country’s Environment was very challenging and called on Nigerians to rise up to the negative consequences of climate change for a sound healthy environment.
The Minister enumerated that some of the activities lined up to mark the event to include citizens walk, talk and tree planting.

WRAPA to support bills enhancing women’s rights in Nigeria
The need for urgent proportional representation of the Nigeria Women in governance was brought to the front brinier in Abuja at a meeting with the club of Madrid an international NGO.
The organisation is of the opinion that for Nigeria to take its endowed leadership position in the African continent, it is important that the country significantly improve on the low percentage of women in elective and appointive positions.
One of the organization’s delegates to Nigeria, a former New Zealand Prime Minister, Mrs. Jennifer Shipley suggested that the adoption of quota system for women and the independence of the electoral commission would enhance the chances of women in clinching elective positions.
Another delegate, a member of the Ugandan Parliament, Mrs. Cecilia Atim-Ogwal advised the Nigerian women to pursue joint ideologies that would promote the interest of the women.
In her contribution, the Secretary General of the Women’s Rights Advancement and Protection Alternative, WRAPA, Hajia Saudatu Mahdi urged women parliamentarians to sponsor and support bills that would enhance women’s rights in Nigeria.

Kwara: Election Tribunal upholds the election of PDP Senator
The Kwara State elections Tribunal sitting in Ilorin has upheld the election of Senator Rukayyat Gbemisola Saraki of the PDP as Senator representing Kwara Central Senatorial District.
The Court dismissed the consolidated petition filed by the accord party and action congress for lack of merit.
In his judgement which lasted two hours, Justice Moh’d Aliyu said one of the petitioners could not proof that he was nominated to contest by the party.
He said that there was no evidence to show that the PDP candidate was not qualified to contest the election.
The Judge said that the allegations of harassment and chasing away of party agents were also not proofed.
The Action Congress and Acord Parties had in a consolidated petition challenged the validity of the election of Senator Gbemisola Saraki of the PDP alleging non-compliance with the election act of 2006 among others.
Meanwhile, the Kwara State Chairman of the Accord Party, Prince Sunday Fagbemi says the party will appeal the judgement.

Calabar: Participants on Electoral Reform call for return of Open Ballot system
Participants at a Three-day public hearing of the Electoral Reform Committee sitting in Calabar have called for the return of the Open Ballot system otherwise known as Option A4 in the country's political process.
They emphasized the need for the political parties to be reduced to two, stressing that INEC should be made to be conducting elections at all levels.
The described the state electoral bodies as being responsible for most electoral malpractices in the system.
The participants explained that the measures would reduce costs, rigging, ethnicity and religious inclinations in the system.
Addressing the opening session, the Chairman of the committee, Retired Justice Muhammadu Uwais noted that the electoral reform became necessary to ensure that future elections in the country met international standards and reduce tension during elections.

Callers on Radio Link stress the need for vocational centres
Callers on Radio Link have stressed the need for more vocational centres to reduce youth dependence on government for white collar job.
A caller from Enugu State, Mr James Aneke said youths in Anambra State are creative and with more vocational centres, they would acquire skills that will make them self reliant.
Another caller from Benin, Mr Andrew Ajayi emphasised the need for the State Government to partner with the private sector in initiating youth empowerment projects.
Mr Oluchi Okafor from Madona University commended Governor Obi for decongesting Onitsha and urged him to do more in the area of security.
Another caller from Jos, Mazi Patrick Okoroafor said investors needed a conducive environment to invest in any State and where marginalization exists, no investor would invest.
In a reaction, Governor Obi said through the State Integrated Development Strategy, his administration had achieved a lot in the different sectors of the economy.
The Governor assured investors of a secured and conducive environment in the State.

Nigeria observes the World No-Tobacco Day
As Nigeria joins the rest of the International Community to observe the world No-tobacco day, the world Health Organisation has called for a ban on all tobacco advertising promotion, and sponsorship.
The WHO says the measure is to protect the world’s One point eight billion young people who are exposed to the risk of tobacco smoking.
According to a statement from the WHO, recent studies prove that the more young people are exposed to tobacco advertising, the more likely they are to start smoking.
Available data show that the risk of dying from lung cancer is more than twenty-two times higher among men who smoke cigarette and about twelve times higher among women who smoke compared with none-smokers.
There are also indication that cigarette smoking increases the risk of many types of cancers including cancers of the lip, oral cavity, pharynx oesophagus, pancreas, larynx, uterus, cervix, urinary bladder and kidney.
However, in Nigeria, the FCT Administration has announced plans to ban tobacco smoking in public places.
Some Nigerians speak on the measure by the FCT to ban smoking in the public.
Inspite of the obvious health hazards associated with cigarette smoking, people still indulge in tobacco smoking.
One of them gives reason for smoking while another says he has quit smoking.
A cross section of Nigerians in Abuja also spoke with Radio Nigeria on why they hate smoking tobacco.
Correspondent reports that this year’s campaign is focusing on the multi-billion dollar efforts of tobacco companies to attract young people to its addictive products through sophisticated marketing.

Yar’Adua clarifies delay in declaration of emergency in power sector
President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua has attributed the delay in the declaration of emergency in the power sector to constant review of efforts by his government to come up with a perfect plan that will address electricity power in the country.
President YarAdua made the clarification while answering questions on media chat.
The President said that already, government was putting finishing touches to a comprehensive National Power Plan which would be completed in the next six weeks.
President Yar’Adua explained that thermal power stations completed by his predecessor were currently experiencing shortage of gas supply resulting to reduction in electricity generation in the country.
President Yar’Adua also gave explanation on the situation of his health.
President Yar’Adua said his administration would insist on strict adherence to the rule of law by all Nigerians as a means of tackling corruption from the root causes.

ECOWAS Court of Justice launches maiden edition of bulletin
The ECOWAS Court of Justice has launched the maiden edition of its court bulletin and community of court of Justice law report.
On the occasion in Abuja, the President of the Court, Justice Amunata Malle Sanogo said the magazines would sensitize the public on the activities of the court.
Justice Sanogo said Integration and Cooperation would remain the watch words of the courts in order to bring sustainable development to the people.
In a keynote address, representative of the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Alhaji Babatunde Nurudeen said with the establishment of the court, member states can now seek redress on issues affecting them.
Also speaking, the Vice President of ECOWAS Commission, Mr. Jean De Dieu Somda noted that the court had played significant role in the management and prevention of conflictions in the sub-region.
Earlier, the Chief Registrar of the court, Mr. Tony Anene-Maidoh expressed optimism that the magazines would bridge the gap between the public and officials of the court.

The Deputy National Chairman of the Organisation, Chief Chukwuma Ometa who stated this at the 1st Anniversary Lecture of the Organisation in Abuja said the passage of the bill would help in checking corruption.

Nigeria celebrates Children’s Day
Today is Children’s Day. The celebration dates back to 1979 when the United Nations first celebrated the International year. Following, the declaration, it was resolved that member States should designate a special day to be marked annually in honour of children.
In compliance with the United Nation’s resolution for member states to designate a special day to celebrate children’s day, May 27th was set aside as children’s day in Nigeria.
May 27th was chosen due to its strategic significance in Nigeria’s history as the day Nigeria transited from regional to the State Structure.
The theme of this year’s celebration is “A Nigeria fit for children: A call for renewal of commitment”.
Activities lined up to celebrate the day include a panel discussion on the theme of the day, a rally, visits to orphanages as well as match past by children in all parts of the country.

The National gallery of art is collaborating with the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria FRCN, to re-orientate the youths as part of the activities marking this year’s children’s day celebrations.

Nigeria Mourns Peace Keepers
The death of forty-five soldiers and one officer of the Nigeria Army in a motor accident have been described as a great loss to the country.
Speaking with Radio Nigeria in Akure, the Commanding Officer, three-two-three Artillery Regiment, Lieutenant Colonel Godwin Umelo described their death as pathetic.
Lieutenant Colonel Umelo prayed God to give the nation, the armed forces and their families the fortitude to bear the loss.
Some soldiers who spoke on the incident expressed grave shock on the death of their colleagues.
Correspondent, reports that officers at Owena Barracks were in a mourning mood while flags flew at half mast in honour of their departed colleagues.

Bayelsa: INEC commences distribution of materials for guber election
The distribution of sensitive materials for Saturday’s re-run governorship election in Bayelsa state is to commence this morning in the capital, Yenagoa.
According to INEC Public Relation Officer in Yenagoa, Mr. Timidi Wariowei, Security Personnel, Party agents and the media will be present during the distribution of the materials to the eight local Government areas.
Though the materials arrived INEC office in Yenagoa midweek, the Commission has been pre-occupied with other logistics especially the posting of electoral officers and training of Corps members that will be involved in the exercise.
Late Thursday, more INEC officials were still arriving from other states in Charta buses as well as security personnel from delta and Rivers states.
According to Mohammed Bello the accreditation of media, monitors and observers is expected to be done today.

FG to establish Debt management department in the states
Plans are underway for the establishment of Debt Management Department in the entire states of the federation.
The Director General of the Debt Management office, Dr. Abraham Nwankwo stated this while briefing newsmen at leadership forum Abuja.
Dr. Nwankwo said the initiative would guide he office in the management of the nation’s debt.
Dr. Nwankwo said that at the moment Nigeria’s local debt stood at 2.2 Trillion Naira.

Senate commences probe of non-payment of local contractors debt
The Senate is probing the non-payment of Local Contractors debt, two years after the money was released.
At a meeting with representatives of the budget office, the Chairman of the Committee on Local and Foreign Debt, Senator Ehigie Edobor Uzamere, expressed worry that about two billion Naira was returned to the government treasury in 2007 without substantially clearing the domestic debts for which the money was meant.
Meanwhile, the merger of the National institute for Nigerian languages NINLAN, with the University of Nigeria Nsukka, is to be officially reversed following the directive of the Senate Committee on Education.
The Minister of Education, Dr Igwe Aja-Nwachukwu disclosed this at a meeting with Education attributed the delay in carrying out the directive of the Committee on the merger, to human and logistic factors.
The Chairman of the Committee Senator Joy Emodi had expressed disappointment over the merger of NINLAN, with the University of Nigeria, an action which she described as flagrant disrespect of the law.
Senator Emodi also asked the Minister to re-instate a wrongfully suspended staff of the National Commission for Mass literacy, Adult and Non-formal Education.

Traditional Rulers to meet on Proposed Review of 1999 Constitution
Traditional Rulers form the six Geo-political zones of the country are to meet to take a common position on the proposed review of the 1999 constitution by the National Assembly.
The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Abubakar Sa’ad III, made this known when the senate president, David Mark visited him in Sokoto.
The Sultan said that the traditional rulers would work together with the joint Committee on constitutional Review to ensure that the best was produced for the country.
Alhaji Abubakar commended the leadership qualities of Senator Mark, whom he said had always collaborated with him in promoting the unity of the country.
Responding, Senator Mark described the Sultan of Sokoto as a leader whose humane and pragmatic leadership qualities had been shown on National unity.
Senator Mark prayed God to grant the Sultan the wisdom and courage to forge ahead.

ADB to expand its activities in Nigeria
The African Development Bank is to expand its activities in Nigeria.
In an exclusive interview with Radio Nigeria in Maputo, Mozambique, the President of the Bank, Dr. Donald Kaberuka said the Bank would invest more on infrastructure and the energy sector.
According to him, the Bank will increase it lending to both the public and private sector to enhance the economic development of the country.
On the report of the High Level Panel, an independent advisory body of the Bank, Dr. Kaberuka said the Bank was already implementing most of the recommendations.
The ADB President thanked the Nigerian Government for extending the Nigerian Trust Fund for 10 years and called on the government not to relent on its efforts in assisting African countries.

Minister tasks Employers to promote industrial peace
Employers of Labour in the country have been asked to carry the unions along
on issues that affect staff of their organisations to promote industrial peace.
The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Labour Alhaji Suleiman Kazeem, made the appeal in Abuja while brokering peace between the Management of Banks, Insurance and Financial Institutions and the two Unions in the Banking Insurance and Finance Institutions, ASSBIFI and NUBIFIE.
The Minister asked the two sides to engage in constructive dialogue with a view to resolving the issues at stake.
Alhaji Kazeem reminded the parties that everybody would be affected when crises erupted in the banking sector.
In an interview, the National President of Association of Senior Staff of Banks Insurance and Financial Institutions, ASSBIFI, Mr. Sanni Lasisi spoke on the problems in the sector.
Mr Lasisi said the unions have also been fighting against unfavourable working conditions of female bank employees which had been denied by some bank Managements.
That the parties have been given till the end of June to resolve their differences and reconvene at the Ministry of Labour.

NRCS to be establish Niger Delta Steering C’ttee
The Nigerian Red Cross Society is to establish a Niger Delta Steering Committee as well as a Warehouse to cushion the effect of crises and disasters in the Country.
The National President of the Society, Owelle Rochas Okorocha announced this in Abuja at a news briefing on the forth coming world Red Cross Day celebration across the globe.
Owelle Rochas explained that the food crises across the world and the devastating effects of the crises in the Niger-Delta have propelled the society to be more proactive.
In his contribution, the Secretary General of the Society, Mr Abiodun Orebiyi pointed out that the Organisation had over the years assisted the government in disaster management, adding that more than 3 million people have benefited from the society.
Mr Orebiyi used the occasion to call on Nigerians to volunteer their services and also donate to the Organisation so as to enlarge the capacity of its help to humanity.

Minister calls on world bank delegation to extend project deadline
The Minister of Mines and Steel, Chief Sarafa Isola says efforts are in top gear to formalise operations in the mining sector in the country.
Chief Isola stated this at a meeting with the World Bank representative to Nigeria, Mr Craig Andrews, on the sustainable management of mineral resources project.
The Minister said government was working hard to ensure that the mining industry was sanitised, while four hundred cooperatives have been formed to provide extension services and assistance to miners.
Chief Isola called on the World Bank delegation to extend the deadline for the completion of the project to 2011, to enable Nigeria complete the reorganisation of the sector.
Speaking earlier, the World Bank head of delegation Mr Craig Andrews expressed satisfaction with the level of job done by the ministry, promising that the World Bank would consider extending the deadline for the realisation of the project.
The project which started in December 2005 is to last for four years.

Yar’Adua directs FG team to dialogue with Lagos State over landed properties
President Umaru Yar’Adua has directed the Federal government team to dialogue with Lagos State over the ownership, use, management and control of landed properties in Lagos State.
The directives followed the presentation made by the government team led by the Ministers of Environment, Housing and Urban Development, Transportation and Justice, that the three issues required action and dialogue with the state for a lasting solution to avoid litigation.
The Minister of State Environment, Mr. Chuka Odom told State House Correspondents after the meeting that dialogue with Lagos State would centre on the main issues of government right to properties, contentious issues that required judicial adjudication and areas of common interest between the Federal government and Lagos state.
Mr Odom expressed optimism that the dialogue would ensure the quick resolution of the misunderstanding between the federal government and Lagos state.

Nigeria short of Affirmative Action on women participation in the decision making
Guests on platform, a Radio Nigeria Network Programme, have expressed concern that Nigeria has not complied fully with the minimum thirty percent women participation in
decision making as demanded by the Affirmative Action.
Speaking on the programme a former Minister of Women Affairs and Youth Development, Hajia Aisha Ismail, urged the government to domesticate all the international protocols signed by the country.
Hajia Aisha remarked that Nigerian Women had been participating in building the nation’s democracy from a disadvantaged position.
Another guest on the programme and a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Dr. Caro Nwosu insisted that women should not be excluded in whatever system any political party wished to adopt.
Dr. Nwosu who was the only female aspirant for the position of the PDP, National Chairman during the Party’s recent National Convention, argued that as a woman, participation in politics involved a lot of sacrifice by her husband and children.
Also speaking on the programme, the co-ordinator of he Women Rights Advancement and Protection Alternative, WRAPA, in the Federal Capital Territory, Hajia Rabi Abdullahi said Nigeria still had a long way to go in gender equity.
Hajia Rabi observed that Non-governmental Organizations, NGOs were making appreciable success in their campaigns against violence on women.

Workers celebrates May Day
Today is May Day, otherwise referred to as Workers’ Day, a day workers celebrate their contributions to the social and economic development of the nation.
May Day is in commemoration of the 1886 event in which some American Workers were killed while demanding improved living conditions.

House to reintroduce FOI bill
The Freedom of Information bill, which has been thrown out in the House of Representatives is to be reintroduced next week.
The Chairman of the Committee on Rules and Business, Chief Ita Enang, told National Assembly Correspondents that it was through wrong impression that the Bill was thrown out.
Also speaking, the sponsor of the Bill, Mrs Abike Dabiri-Erewa from Lagos State, said when passed, would promote accountability and good governance in the country.

Yar’Adua condoles Adesanya’s family
President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua has condoled the family of the late Pa Abraham Adesanya over the death of their father.
In a letter, President Yar’Adua said though Pa Adesanya has passed on at a ripe old age, millions of Nigerians mourn the loss of an icon of the nation’s struggle for justice, equity and good governance.
The President described Chief Adesanya as a patriot who stood out firmly all through the political history since independence, for the loftiest ideals, of democracy, the rule of law and committed leadership.
President Yar’Adua said as a lawyer, legislator, leader of Afenifere, and Pan Nigerian nationalist, Pa Abraham Adesanya was one politician who consistently made the peoples’ cause his own.
According to the President Chief Adesanya’s exemplary courage shone like a beacon of hope, while his resilience remained a constant check on the excesses of tyranny during the darkest days of dictatorship.
President Yar’Adua prayed that Almighty God grants his soul eternal rest, and urged Nigerians to emulate the wisdom, high standards and courage of Chief Adesanya.

ILO: Nigeria to represent West Africa on the Governing body for 3yrs
Nigeria has been selected to represent the West African sub region, on the Governing body of the International labour Organisation for three years in observer capacity.
Fifty three AU member countries took the decision at an ordinary session of African Union labour and Social Affairs Commission in Adis-Asaba Ethiopia.
Ghana will serve as Deputy Member, while Mozambique, South Africa, Tanzania Guinea and Tunisia will represent other sub regions in Africa.
African membership of the governing body will be from 2008 to 2011 and will include six titular seats and seven deputy seats.
Commenting on the outcome of the meeting, the leader of the Nigeria delegation and permanent Secretary Federal Ministry of Labour Alhaji Suleiman Kassim called on African countries to continue with the spirit of consultation and negotiation exhibited during the meetings.

Mark advocates functional education system in the country
Senate President David Mark has advocated a functional education system as a solution the socio economic and political problems of the country.
In an interview with NAN, the President’s Special Adviser on Communications, Mr Olusegun Adeniyi, said in Wiesbaden, Germany that the President was in good health and fully prepared to confront critical challenges on his return.
According to him, the President intends to give priority attention to measures aimed at addressing the impact of the current global rise in food prices as it affects the ordinary Nigerian.
Mr Adeniyi added that President Yar’Adua was committed to the implementation of the 2008 budget.

FG sets up C’ttee to manage the country’s Foreign Reserves

OGUN: Tribunal upholds election of Gbenga Daniel
The Ogun State Election Petition Tribunal has upheld the election of Chief Gbenga Daniel as Governor of Ogun State.
Ruling on a petition filed by the ANPP candidate in the 2007 governorship election Senator Ibikunle Amosun, the tribunal noted that there were contradictions in the submission of many of the plaintiff’s witnesses.
Based on the observation the tribunal said the petition lacked sufficient evidence and substance that could lead to the nullification of Governor Gbenga Daniel’s election.

This is to enable members of the House to resolve the impasse associated with this year's appropriation bill.
The Speaker, Chief Anayo Nnebe, in directing the majority leader of the House to move a motion to this effect, said the indefinite adjournment followed the intervention of the Elders Forum.
According to him, the adjournment would enable members of the Anambra State Elders Forum to critically examine the alleged delay in the passage of the bill.
He however, said that the House would reconvene as soon as the Elders Forum completes its assignment.

The House of Representatives Committee on Petroleum Resources, Downstream, has asked the Federal Government to establish testing laboratories for the Department of
Petroleum Resources, DPR, to ascertain the quality imported.
The Chairman of the Committee, chief Clever Ikisikpo, stated this while briefing National Assembly Correspondents on steps being taken by the Committee to ease the current fuel scarcity in the country.
Chief Ikisikpo, said that the Committee had invited all the stakeholders in the nation’s petroleum industry for a meeting on how to improve the distribution and supply of petroleum products to all parts of the country.
Chief Clever Ikisikpo stressed the need for the NNPC to work in close collaboration with relevant stakeholders in the industry and the Committee to ensure that Nigerians did not suffer untold hardship as a result of fuel scarcity.

Adamawa: INEC postpones re-run Guber election
The re-run governorship election in Adamawa state scheduled for this Saturday has been postponed indefinitely.
Addressing newsmen in Abuja, the National Electoral Commissioner in charge of information and publicity, Mr. Philip Umedi Junior said the decision followed INEC’s resolved to act in accordance with the rule of law.
Some of the political parties led by the Labour Party had asked the Katsina High Court to stop INEC from conducting the election.
They also wanted the court to determine whether the parties that did not participate in last year’s governorship election had legal rights to take part in the re-run.

High Court upturns revocation licence of Societe Generale Bank
Following the judgement of the Federal High Court up turning the revocation of the licence of Societe Generale Bank of Nigeria by the Central Bank of Nigeria the CBN,
says it will abide by the ruling of the court.
In a statement in Abuja, after a meeting of the financial sector surveillance Committee, the CBN said as a responsible and law abiding corporate body, it would not appeal the ruling.
Consequently, it has given Societe Generale Bank of Nigeria thirty-days to complete all processes relating to its acquisition by another bank as ruled by the court.
It says its action is in the interest of depositors and the banking system.
The statement assured all Nigerians of the commitment of Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation and the CBN to protect depositors and members of the investing public.
The Federal High Court had on the second of this month ruled that Societe Generale Bank should have been given sufficient notice to meet the conditions attached to the payment of eighty percent of the its indebtedness to the CBN.

NGO advises Nigeria Police to equip forensic department
The Nigeria Police Force has been advised to adequately equip its forensic department for effective crime investigations.
The Executive Director of Crime Victims Foundation, Mrs. Gloria Egbuji, said that this had become necessary in view of the upsurge in crime rate, particularly, murder cases.
She explained that if the Police forensic department is adequately equipped, it would go a long way in assisting Police Officers to detect perpetrators of crimes.
Mrs. Egbuji noted that some suspects suffered various forms of torture during interrogation due to lack of forensic equipment in the course of investigations.
She also advised the force to find a means of documenting and distributing the photographs of suspects and their finger prints to all Police formations for future reference.
Mrs. Egbuji who called for respect for the rule of law and the rights of suspects by Policemen also expressed support for community policing, but advised that its implementation should be gradual, particularly in areas like Lagos.

AGF justifies cancellation of Ajaokuta/Iron Ore Mining contracts

FG cancels Ajaokuta and National Iron Ore concession agreement
The concession agreement between the Federal Government and Global Infrastructure Nigeria limited, in respect of the Ajaokuta Steel Company and the National Iron Ore Mining Company have been cancelled by the Federal Executive Council.
The council also approved, private sector structured financing of electricity projects in the country.
Newsmen report that a contract to boost power rehabilitation of four power sub-stations in Asokoro district of Abuja received the blessing of the council.

Obasanjo may appear for probe – Elumelu
The House of Representatives Committee on Power probing contracts awarded by the last administration says it will not hesitate to invite former President Olusegun
Obasanjo to appear before it, if it becomes necessary at the end of its tour of project sites.
Chairman of the committee, Mr Ndudi Elumelu stated this in an interview with Journalists in Calabar after a courtesy call on Cross River State Governor, Mr Liyel Imoke.
Mr Elumelu said they had to go to all the zones to ascertain the extent of work done so far.
Other personalities like the former Vice President, former Senate President and former Speaker may be invited by the committee if the need arises.
In an address of welcome, the Governor of Cross River, Mr Liyel Imoke noted that the job of the committee was a very important one to the country saying he was pleased that the committee deemed it fit to go round and visit the various project sites.
Governor Imoke said the visit would afford members the opportunity to see things for themselves.

National Round-table seeks collaboration with FRCN
The Dean, Board Faculty of National Round-table for proactive laws and good governance in Nigeria, Mr Eseme Eyiboh says his league is seeking collaboration
with Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria to promote enactment of laws that will promote good governance in Nigeria.
Mr Eyiboh made this known when he led a delegation of the Board on a courtesy visit to the Director General of the FRCN Mr Ben Egbuna in Abuja.
He said the collaboration would provide an opportunity for his group to pass across its visions and aspirations to Nigerians through the FRCN.

KOGI: INEC declares Idris Governor-elect
Alhaji Ibrahim Idris of the PDP has been declared the Governor-elect of Kogi State.
The INEC Resident Commissioner Mr Ayo Adakeja made the declaration in Lokoja after the final collation of all the results from the twenty-one local government areas.
Mr Ayo Adakeja announced the final results of the governorship election in Kogi State with Alhaji Ibrahim Idris of the PDP emerging the winner. On the other hand, political parties in the state have reacted to the outcome.

Kogi Guber election holds today
Kogi will make history as the first state in the country in which the governorship election will be re-run in compliance with the tribunal’s ruling nullifying the state’s
gubernatorial election held in April 2007. The verdict of the lower court was upheld by the Court of Appeal.

Nigeria and Benin to create River Vista for boundary identification
Nigeria and Benin Republic are to create a River Vista along the Adjare River to make their International Boundary easily noticeable along the Tongeji Island in Ogun State and D’ajarra town in Benin Republic.
The Project which would be jointly funded would entail the clearing of weeds along the 27 kilometre Adjare River which formed the natural boundary line in that border sector.
The Vista project was announced when both the Director General of National Boundary Commission, Alhaji Sadiq Diggi represented by the Director, International Boundaries, Alhaji Bashir Shettima with his counterpart, the Director General of Republic of Benin Boundary Commission, Mr Jules Gontan Capo Chi Chi visited the area.
Commenting on the Nigerian/Benin Republic Boundary, Alhaji Diggi said it was the most peaceful in the entire West African Sub-region.
He assured the boarder Communities that they would be involved in the Vista project to ensure speedy completion.
In his contribution, Mr Capo Chi Chi said Nigeria and Benin Republic were basically one people with shared historical and cultural ties.
He commended Traditional Rulers in the communities for their efforts at ensuring peaceful co- existence in their domains.
Responding, Oba Olorun Kosi Okiki Sule 1 of Tongeji Island in Ogun State commended the good gesture of the Governments of both Countries.
Also, the Deputy Chairman of D’adjarra Local Government Community in Benin Republic, Mr Soni Dossa Charles said that the project would enhance the existing cordial relationship among their boarder dwellers.

US Govt donates 4 security body scanners to NDLEA
The United States Government donated four security body scanners to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA.
At the presentation and inauguration of one of the machines installed at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport Abuja, the US Ambassador to Nigeria Mrs. Robin Sanders said the gesture was part of efforts to support NDLEA in the its fight against drug trafficking.

National Bureau of statistics introduces new ways to check inflation
New ways to measure the rate of inflation in the country are to be introduced by the National Bureau of statistics next month.
The Assistant Director, Public and International Relations, Mr H.C. Eteama told Nigeria that the measure was necessitated by the shift in the consumption pattern of Nigerians.
According to him, Nigerians now spend more money on non food items especially on Telecommunication.
Mr Eteama said that both the old and new ways would run concurrently.
He said the new pattern was in line with International best practice.

RIVERS: Police Commissioner warns political parties against LG Elections
Political Parties in Rivers State have been warned against acts capable of disrupting the peaceful conduct of Saturday’s Local Government election.
At a two-day interactive session on security during the election, the Commissioner of Police in the State, Mr. Felix Ogbaudu cautioned that anyone caught fermenting trouble would be arrested and prosecuted.

Former Minister advocates integration of hunters into security system
A former minister of finance, Dr Onaolapo Soleye has advocated the integration of traditional hunters into the nation’s security system to guarantee the protection of lives and property.
He made the call on Tuesday at Ake palace in Abeokuta, Ogun state, where hunters from all over the country converged to deliberate on matters of mutual interest.
Dr Soleye, who said he took up hunting as a hobby from childhood, noted that traditional hunters had played significant roles in the protection and founding of communities.
Dr Soleye pointed out that the organized hunters apart from being the custodians of culture were noted for honesty and integrity in matters of security.
Also speaking, the chief host and Alake of Egbaland, Oba Adedotun Gbadebo assured the hunters of adequate support and recognition of their role in the society.

House C’ttee probing power sector meets on Wednesday
On Wednesday, the House Committee on Power and Steel probing power sector funding between 1999 to 2007 will meet to consider over 80 exhibits presented to it during its public hearing, more revelations have emerged on how the former
president, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, waived due process for payments and made anticipatory approvals for the power projects.
Correspondent reports that the Implementation Committee also incorporated the Niger Delta Power Holding Company Plc with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) and made 25 per cent advance payments to three companies, Messers Lahmeyer International/O.T. Otis Engineering and a supplier of power generation equipment and related services, General Electric Company (GE), without the necessary approval.
A document made available to newsmen showed that the Federal Ministry of Power had written to Obasanjo on 22nd November 2005 vide a letter FMP&S/HM/ABJ/033 entitled “Implementation of the Niger Delta Integrated National Power Project: Request for Approval for Payments”.

Christians celebrate Easter
Again violence, hatred and were injustice revisited by Pope Benedict who, as Christians marked the resurrection of Jesus Christ, decried the many wounds that continue to disfigure humanity in our own day.
The Pope, who will be 81, next month, celebrated an Easter Mass for tens thousands people in St. Peter's Square.
The Sunday mass came hours after an Easter vigil service on Saturday night where, in a surprise move, the Pope baptised Moslem-born convert Magdi Allam, 55, an outspoken journalist and fierce critic of Islamic extremism.
The Egyptian-born Allam's conversion to Christianity - he took the name "Christian" for his baptism - was kept secret until the Vatican disclosed it in a statement less than an hour before the Saturday night service began.
Allam, who is a strong supporter of Israel, is under police protection following threats against him.
Allam defended the pope in 2006 when the pontiff made a speech in Regensburg, Germany, that many Muslims perceived as depicting Islam as a violent faith.
The Vatican statement announcing Allam was joining Catholicism said all newcomers were "equally important before God's love and welcome in the community of the Church".
Allam, who has been living in Italy for 35 years, has said he was never a very devout Muslim. Still, his conversion to Christianity came as a surprise.

Nigeria celebrates water day
Nigeria joins the rest of the world to celebrate water day. The United Nations General Assembly in December 1992 declared March 22 every year as World Water
Day to highlight the importance of Safe drinking water to human survival and development and to encourage governments to expand access to it.
Some Nigerians who spoke to Radio Nigeria on the Water situation stressed the need for government to intensify efforts at making them have access to safe water.
The UNICEF Deputy country Representatives in Nigeria, Dr Robert Limlim told Radio Nigeria that the Theme of the celebration which is “Sanitation Matters” was significant.
Also contributing, the country Representative of Water Aid International, a non-governmental organisation, Dr Jonathan Burton spoke on the organisation’s efforts to support Nigeria in its effort to provide safe water to the people.
The Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Water Resources, Professor Oladapo Afolabi spoke on government effort to make Nigerians enjoy safe water and sanitation.

As Christians all over the world mark Good Friday, the Catholic Archbishop of Abuja, the Most Reverend John Onayikan, speaks on the essence of the event.
Archbishop Onayikan, who is also the President of the Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, said the day was called Good Friday, because it was on the Cross that Jesus Christ won salvation for mankind.

UN commends Nigeria/Cameroon boundary dispute resolution
The United Nations has commended the political will and maturity exhibited by the governments of Nigeria and Cameroon to resolve their Land and Maritime boundary dispute.
The outgoing Chairman of the Nigeria/Cameroon Mixed Commission and Special Representative of the UN Secretary General for West Africa, Mr Lamine Cissee made the commendation in an interview with Radio Nigeria in Yaoundé, Cameroon.
Mr Cisse said within his tenure as Chairman of the Mixed Commission, he was impressed with the honesty and determination of the governments and people of the two countries to make peace and co-exist as brothers.
He said that Nigeria and Cameroon had created a remarkable landmark in the history of conflict resolution in the world.

NAICOM Releases Guidelines for High Rise Buildings
The National Insurance Commission, NAICOM, has released guidelines for insuring high rise buildings under construction.
The Commissioner for Insurance,
Mr Fola Daniel announced the development in Abuja at the launch of Motor Accident Victims Insurance Compensation Scheme.
Mr Daniel explained that the pilot programme for the building Insurance Scheme would begin in Abuja, Lagos and other major cities.
The pilot programme would take care of buildings more than two floors and public buildings under construction.

IMO – Overloading of Vehicles, Source of Worry to FRSC
Over load of goods and passengers by motorists in Imo State is a source of worry to the Federal Road Safety Commission, FRSC.
In view of this the Commission has promised to commence a campaign against the trend.
The new sector Commander in the State, Mr Angus Ibezim during a courtesy visit to the General Manager of Radio Nigeria Heartland F.M Owerri, said the FRSC, was ready to comply with the act establishing the commission.
Mr Ibezim solicited the cooperation of Radio Nigeria Heartland F.M Owerri in covering the activities of the Commission and its assistance in educating the people on road hazards.
He commended the station for educating motorists on traffic rules and regulations.
General Manager of Radio Nigeria Heartland FM Owerri, Mr Chika Emerenwa, who received the sector Commander in his office, said the Station was ready to partner with the Commission to enlighten the public on the dangers of over speed and other traffic rules.
Mr Emerenwa blamed road accidents mainly on people’s bad behaviours on roads.

Minister calls for collaboration between oil companies and NBDA
The Minister of State for Science and Technology, Dr Alhassan Bako Zaku has stressed the need for a strong collaboration between the oil companies in the Niger Delta and the National Biotechnology Development Agency to train youths in the area to be useful citizens.

INEC sets up C’ttee to produce strategic document on Agric
A technical committee has been set up by the National Economic Council to produce a strategic document on how to harness the country’s agricultural potentials for economic growth.
Briefing newsmen after the council meeting on Monday at the Presidential villa, Abuja, Governor Ikedi Ohakim of Imo State said the time had come for Nigeria to take practical steps to realise its mission.
The meeting also discussed issues concerning excess crude oil revenue and the deductions for the construction of Primary Health Care Centres in the local government areas.
The Minister of National Planning, Alhaji Sanusi Dagash gave further explanations. State House Correspondent reports that the next meeting of the National Economic Council is scheduled for the 21st of next month.
