RIVERS STATE: MOTHER OF GOVERNOR ELECT KIDNAPPED


Madam Cecilia Omehia the Mother of the Rivers State Governor-elect, Mr. Celestine Omehia was reported to have been kidnapped on Tuesday by unidentified persons. She was released unhurt later in the night.

Madam Omehia who is over sixty years was kidnapped Tuesday night at her home in Ubima, Ikwere Local Government Area of Rivers State South – south Nigeria.


Mr Celestine Omehia was elected governor of Rivers State in April 14th polls conducted all over the country.

There was no information as to the reason for her kidnapp or whether the kidnappers demanded and received a ransom.


The State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Felix Ogbaudu who confirmed the incident in Port Harcourt said information available to the Command indicated that the kidnappers were about seven in number.


He said the Police had intensified investigation into the matter but that no arrests had been made.

Portharcourt, in Nigeria's oil-rich Niger Delta, has been witnessing numerous kidnaps, mostly of expatriate oil workers, for more than a year now since militant groups in the area stepped up pressure on the federal government for increased share of Nigeria's oil revenue. Most of the victims are usually released unhurt but there have been cases of deaths.
