Nigeria celebrates World AIDS Day

Nigeria joins the rest of the world to mark the World AIDS Day.It is a day set aside to draw the attention of the global community to the effects of HIV/AIDS on the people.

 

Africa accounts for about twenty seven million of the world forty million people living with HIV/AIDS. The theme of this year’s celebration is leadership.

The Director General of the National Agency for the Control of AIDS NACA Professor Babatunde Oshotimenhin speaks on the efforts of the government to ensure greater involvement in the national response to AIDS.


Vice President Goodluck Jonathan is about now leading a walk from FCDA to Eagle Square venue of the celebration.


And from Kaduna State, the Project Manager of the Kaduna State Action Committee on AIDS, Dr Mark David Anthony reiterated the fact that there is no cure for the virus. He explained that what is obtainable is treatment for HIV/AIDS through anti-retroviral drugs to stop multiplication of the virus.


Dr Anthony said the committee was tackling other oppurnitunistic infections in AIDS patients such as tuberculosis and cancer through collaboration with the Tuberculosis Control Agency.

International Standard should be our target – Yar’ Adua

That was the message from the President Umar Musa Yar’ Adua. He stated this at the 2007 National Science and Technology Week, “NASTECH” taking place in Abuja.

Science newsmen report that the President wants Nigerian investors to contribute to the realization of the vision 20 20 of his administration.
