Nigeria celebrates World AIDS Day

Nigeria joins the rest of the world to mark the World AIDS Day.It is a day set aside to draw the attention of the global community to the effects of HIV/AIDS on the people.

 

Africa accounts for about twenty seven million of the world forty million people living with HIV/AIDS. The theme of this year’s celebration is leadership.

The Director General of the National Agency for the Control of AIDS NACA Professor Babatunde Oshotimenhin speaks on the efforts of the government to ensure greater involvement in the national response to AIDS.


Vice President Goodluck Jonathan is about now leading a walk from FCDA to Eagle Square venue of the celebration.


And from Kaduna State, the Project Manager of the Kaduna State Action Committee on AIDS, Dr Mark David Anthony reiterated the fact that there is no cure for the virus. He explained that what is obtainable is treatment for HIV/AIDS through anti-retroviral drugs to stop multiplication of the virus.


Dr Anthony said the committee was tackling other oppurnitunistic infections in AIDS patients such as tuberculosis and cancer through collaboration with the Tuberculosis Control Agency.

David Mark, Awoniyi’s death loss to the nation

Senate President David Mark has described the death of Elder Statesman Chief Sunday Awoniyi as a great loss to the nation.

In a statement in Abuja, Senator Mark said the sad loss had robbed Nigeria of Awoniyi is invaluable experience and wisdom to further cement the country’s democracy.


He described Chief Sunday Awoniyi as principled, honest and dedicated Nigerian.
In a reaction, the Speaker of the House of Representatives Mr. Dimeji Bankole expressed shock over the death of the Arewa consultative forum AC F, Chairman.


In a statement, Mr. Bankole described Chief Sunday Awoniyi as a detribalised Nigerian.
On his part, Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar said a statement that he received the news of the death of Awoniyi with a deep sense of sorrow and shock.

He said Chief Awoniyi exemplified the rare quality of a true Nigerian who held tenaciously to his religious belief and ethnic identity in the midst of Frauds and associates of different convictions.
The ANPP has also described the death of Awoniyi as a great loss to the country.


The National Secretary of the Party Senator Sa’idu Kumo told News Agency of Nigeria that Awoniyi died in the course of nation building.
Chief Sunday Awoniyi, a frontline politician and Chairman of AREWA Consultative Forum died in a London Hospital.


A Government House source revealed that the Kogi State Governor, Alhaji Ibrahim Idris was informed of the death of Chief Awoniyi by his eldest son, Mr. Yomi Awoniyi.

House C’ttee promises to support tourism

The House of Representatives has promised to support the nation’s fledging Tourism sector to attain greater height.

The Chairman House Committee on Culture and Tourism, Mrs Mercy Almona-Isei, made the pledge on Wednesday when she led members of the committee on a fact finding visit to the Nigeria Tourism Development Corporation NTDC.


Mrs. Almona-Isel said the time was ripe for the tourism industry to contribute to the diversification of the nation’s economy.


Mrs. Almonan-Isel commended the leadership of the NTDC for its commitment in charting a new course for the nation’s tourism industry.
In a remark, the Director-General of the NTDC, Otunba Segun Runsewe urged Government at all levels to stop paying lip service to the industry and be committed to growth.


Otumba Runsewe spoke on the efforts of the Corporation to promote the nation’s tourism potential. He called for closer collaboration with the legislature to ensure success in the industry.
