FG to focus attention on efficient information system of the country
The Federal Government is to focus more attention on the provision of efficient information system for the socio-economic development of the country.
The Minister of State for Aviation, Mr Felix Hyat announced this at a two day workshop, organisation by NIMET in collaboration with a foreign partner as part of activities to mark the World Meteorological Day in Abuja.
Mr Hyat emphasized that the devastating effect of climate change had brought the phenomena into focus and therefore could not be ignored.
The Minister who urged the Nigerian Meteorological Agency to rise up to the challenge of weather monitoring called for more assistance from foreign organizations to move the Agency forward.
In his welcome address, the Director General of NIMET, Dr Anthony Anuforom explained that the Agency was aware of the great expectations of the Nigerian public in providing accurate weather data.
He gave an assurance that NIMET had the technical and scientific know-how to meet up with the challenges ahead.
Dr Anuforom however stressed the need to provide the Agency with operational infrastructure.
In a lecture entitled “Meteorology, a tool for Safety and Development” Professor Temi Ologunorisa pointed out that for NIMET to render the desired service, the Agency should be equipped with the latest technology which could fly into severe storms and provide detailed observations.
Two latest bulletins by the Agency Nigerian Climate Review Bulletin 2007 and 2008 rainfall prediction and socio-economic implications for southern states in Nigeria were launched at the occasion.
