Consequently, the IGP who is an ardent stickler for justice and equity has initiated disciplinary measures when necessary and also commended as appropriate.

Police Diary has impacted positively on policing as a whole leading to improved image building and professionalism within the rank and file. For example, issues regarding salary increase, pensions and promotions have been treated on the platform of Police Diary to the satisfaction of the petitioners.

To buttress this point, the IGP has instructed all 37 commissioners of police to appear physically on the programme and respond to question raised in the programme.

In a nutshell, Police Diary is charting a new course in sensitizing and empowering both the general public and the police force as to the need for balance and justice as regards their relationship.

Check this out: a couple of months ago, a cinema operator from Miaduguri called in on the Network interactive, security programme Police Diary.

According to his report, two groups of policemen usually visit him and his fellow cinema operators daily to extort the sum of One Hundred and Fifty Thousand Naira (150, 000.00) from each of them..

The police men would always claim to be acting on instructions of the Borno State Command or the Police Headquarters, Abuja. Each time the operators resisted giving this money, they received severe threats.

This complaint was filed just before the end of that day’s Police threats. This complaint was filed just before the end of that day’s Police Diary.
The Police Commissioner, Borno State command called in o the programme to assure that the issue would be investigated.

The Police Commissioner collected the operator’s telephone number from the programme producer and contacted him immediately and invited him to the Police Command Office.

Men of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) were dispatched to the area. Soon after, the errant policemen arrived for their usual collection and were promptly nabbed. The officers have since been tried, convicted and dismissed.

This is just one of the many positive results of the Radio Nigeria’s star programme, Police Diary, which debuted on Network Service on January 2, 2007.

The programme has been a hit with millions of listeners across the country. Since all FRCN 32 plus stations tune in, the programme has one of the widest coverage in Nigeria and on the web.

Police diary gives the listener an opportunity to interact with the Nigerian Police Authority which is usually represented by the Force Public Relations Officer or any other senior officer.

On each edition, an issue is raised and listeners are required to call in and make contributions on the conduct of men and officers of the Nigerian Police Force.

The aim of the programme is to make the Nigerian Police Force as effective as its counterparts in the developed world. And the ultimate objective is to reduce crime to the barest minimum in the country.

The cinema operators in Maiduguri now have a renewed zest for life and patriotic fervour.

According to the complainant, who wrote to Mrs. Msurshima Kighir, the Producer of Police Diary, “we now have some respite; this goes to show that there’s still hope for our generation and our country.
