CBA Member organisations in Fiji

With Fiji Suspended from the Commonwealth, what is the position of the
CBA's member organisations in Fiji?  As a Commonwealth NGO, it is up to
the CBA whether to keep such organisations in membership in suspend
them.  This is a matter for the CBA Committee to consider in due course.


CBA Lecture 2009

With the UK deep in controversy over recent remarks by James Murdoch of
News International about what he feels is "unfair competition from the
BBC" and his view that all broadcasting should be run on a basis of
profit, the MD of the ABC, Mark Scott, delivers a CBA Lecture next week
on "Why Public Broadcasting Matters More than Ever."  This is on 9th
September at the Australian High Commission in London.  Admission is by
ticket only.


Apply Now for 2010-11 CBA MA Bursaries

The Commonwealth Broadcasting Association is offering two bursaries to
full-time staff of CBA's member organisations from developing countries
in the Commonwealth for post-graduate courses at the prestigious City
University and the University of Westminster in London, UK.

The MA Bursaries are in International Journalism at the City University
and in broadcast related subjects at the Westminster University. The
scholarship is tenable for one year.

The bursaries are part sponsored by the Chevening Programme of the UK's
Foreign and Commonwealth Office, Westminster and City Universities,
International Students House, Goodenough College and the Commonwealth
Broadcasting Association.

Please note that airfares of selected bursars will have to be paid by
the bursars' organisations and a guarantee to this effect must be given.

Apply for MA bursary at Universiti of Brunei

The Commonwealth Broadcasting Association (CBA) invites applications
from full-time staff of CBA member organisations from the developing
countries of the Commonwealth for a one-year Masters in Public Policy at
the University of Brunei.

This is a full-time course and the bursary includes full-tuition fees
for the selected applicant and free accommodation at the university
hostel (single room only). This is being sponsored by Universiti Brunei
Darussalam.

Please note that airfare to and from Brunei and subsistence costs have
to be met by the candidate or the candidate's organisation.

CBA Self Directed - Introduction to Change Management

September

The CBA will be launching its first self-directed online learning
modules for trainees in member stations. The course introduces
broadcasters to the concepts of change management and performance
management. The aim is to meet the need for more effective staff
development and good governance of Commonwealth institutions. This 4
module course introduces broadcasters to some basic concepts of change
management and performance management, relating them to real situations
in the work place.

Areas covered include the basics of: common attitudes to change;
communication techniques; performance management and appraisal systems.

CBA, Distance Learning Course - Website Media Production Course

This eight week distance learning course in website development helps
online producers understand the tools and best practice of website
coding and layout, especially in developing countries where resources
are limited. The course covers design issues as well as basic to

New CBA Media Forum for TV & Radio

In July 2009 the CBA launched a new online discussion forum for staff at
member stations around the world.

The forum is used by members to discuss current issues and post
questions to each other. Guest experts in different areas of media
production are also available to answer questions through this forum.

We hope this exciting forum will give greater access to advice and
network opportunities for CBA member organisation and their staff.

Access to the forum will be free for CBA member stations but only
available through a secure username and password.

Scriptwriting & Producing Children's Programmes Workshop

Journalists from Commonwealth Broadcasting Association member organisations in the Caribbean (TV) are invited to apply to attend a workshop on children's programmes, which takes place at The Creative Production & Training Centre in Jamaica from Monday 15 to 19 June 2009.

The workshop will include screenings, discussion and also look at how to construct a good script as well as shooting and filming a short film for children.

This 5 day workshop is organised by the Creative Production & Training Centre in partnership with The Commonwealth Broadcasting Association (www.cba.org.uk) and Prix Jeunesse. Places on this workshop are limited and MUST be endorsed by your manager and are only open to CBA member organisation staff.

The workshop is offered for free but travel and accommodation costs will need to be covered by the member organisation.

This 8 week course is a distillation of some of the "must have" basics skills of Radio production. It will be based on part of the existing Radio Journalism and Production course, with new elements to reflect changing use of the internet in radio journalism.

The course aims to help working radio reporters and producers to understand a range of issues and skills and to help them to apply them to their daily work.

5 day Inter-ethnic & Conflict Workshop

 

Mid Career Practitioners from Commonwealth Broadcasting Association member organistions from Uganda, Tanzania, Malawi and Mozambique (TV & Radio) are invited to apply to attend a development journalism workshop entitled "Interethnic and Conflict Reporting" which takes place in Nairobi, Kenya from the Monday 22 to 26 June 2009.

The workshop will help to develop and promote a positive role for the media in counteracting and preventing negative portrayal of different cultures and conflict. The project is designed to promote a constructive role for the media in helping societies reduce conflicts based on ethnicity, race, religion and gender.

This 5 day workshop is organised by the Commonwealth Broadcasting Association (www.cba.org.uk <http://www.cba.org.uk/> ) in partnership with The Commonwealth Foundation (www.commonwealthfoundation.com <http://www.commonwealthfoundation.com/> ) and UNESCO, Nairobi ( www.unesco-nairobi.org <http://www.unesco-nairobi.org/> ) and the local partner is Nation TV.

CBA Bursary to visit IBC - last chance to apply

 

The CBA is again offering a bursary to visit IBC in September 2009. Applications are invited from staff working for member organisations in the African Continent, Asia, the Caribbean and Pacific Islands.

Applicants should hold a position in their company which has responsibility for technical matters at a policy or planning level and for which a visit to IBC would benefit them and their companies but due to financial restrictions they would not otherwise be able to attend. Only one application from a single company will be considered, so it is advantageous that companies ensure that there strongest candidate applies. In the event of multiple applicants from the same company only the first one received by the CBA will be considered.

Closing date for applications for the bursary is 25th May 2009 and the successful applicant will be notified by May 31st.

The bursary will cover the economy return airfare to Amsterdam in the Netherlands, five nights bed and breakfast accommodation and a daily subsistence allowance. In addition the successful applicant will have access to all conference proceedings and the exhibition. It will be the applicants' responsibility to obtain a visa to visit the Netherlands. Letters of invitation will be provided.

Get more involved in the Commonwealth

 

The Commonwealth Foundation is calling for applications from young professionals under the age of 30 years, what are members of a Commonwealth Association and who wish to participate in a study visit to Chennai, India to gain an understanding of development priorities in the Commonwealth on issues such as gender equality, HIV and AIDS, climate change and disability.

This call for nominations is open to young professionals from Asia and Africa. The Foundation wishes to encourage more young professionals to become actively involved in the work of Commonwealth Associations by leading on issues of importance to young people.

Applicants must:

* Be under 30 years of age at the time the youth study tour is scheduled to begin

* Be a member of an accredited Commonwealth Proffessional Association (such as the CBA)

* Able to demonstrate that they have and interest in global issues and how these relate to their country

* Willing to undertake work with their Commonwealth Association after the visit

* Have obtained a secondary school degree or equivalent at the time of application, preferably in a field relevant to development - continued academic study at the University level would be advantageous

* Be fluent in English

* Be a citizen of a Commonwealth developing country in Asia or Africa

Priority will be given to candidates that may have a minimum of two years work experience in a developing country in an area relevant to the Commonwealth Foundation's Human Development Programme - Health, Gender, Education, Youth, and Disability.

Applications must reach the CBA by: 20 May, 2009

 

Oscar van Leer Fellowships 2009

The Oscar van Leer Fellowships aim to contribute to a gradual improvement in the quality and quantity of media coverage of early childhood issues by training up-and-coming journalists.

The fellowship consists of a four-week, expenses-paid training course in The Netherlands covering journalism and children's issues.

The fellowships are open to journalists in Colombia, Mexico, Peru, Kenya, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, the Caribbean, and the Indian region of Orissa. Applicants can work in any form of media, including print, radio, television or web.

Commonwealth Short Story Competition deadline approaches



Now is the time for CBA members to encourage their listeners/viewers to
enter the Commonwealth Short Story Competition. Here are some quick points
that could be mentioned.



* The winner receives a prize of £2,000 and there are regional prizes of
£500.
* The competition is open to all people who are citizens of a Commonwealth
member country.
* There is no age limit or requirement to write about a particular theme.
* Entries may be made by both amateur and professional writers.
* The stories must not exceed 600 words.
* Entries should be sent to e.dcosta@commonwealth.int

Applications for Commonwealth Professional Fellowship 2009



The Commonwealth Scholarship Commission supports fellowships for
mid-career professionals from developing Commonwealth countries to spend
periods (typically three months) with a relevant UK host organisation in
their field for a programme of professional development.  This can include
a very limited time for attendance at short courses as well as visits to
other organisations.  Approximately 65 Fellowships are awarded each year.
The CBA is prepared to support appropriate, high quality applications from
employees of its member organastion.



Applications can only be made through the CBA which acts as the 'nominator'.

A statement of not more than 400 words explaining to which extent the
fellowship will be relevant to your organisation  and country should be

Connecting Rural Communities Forum to be held in Delhi



Member organisations in Delhi may like to know that the Commonwealth
Telecommunications Organisation is running an event called "Connecting
Rural Communities Forum 09" on 23-25 June in Delhi. It's based around
increasing both ICT connectivity and data rich broadcasting. There's a
panel session on the first day looking at:  Identifying successful and
transferable lessons for connecting rural areas: Practical insights from

ABC - International Development Opportunities



ABC International Projects works to build capacity in partner
organisations through specialist advice, technical support, training and
mentoring. Currently they are working in Papua New Guinea, Vanuatu,
Solomon Islands, Cambodia, Vietnam and various Pacific-wide initiatives.
Over the next 12-18 months ABC International Projects will be seeking a
range of specialist advisors or consultants for assignment durations
ranging from one month to one year. Expressions of interest are sought.

The CBA will again next year support a Workshop on Children’s TV programmes, with AIBD, SABA & ASBU and other international partners.

 

40 TV producers will participate in this international children’s TV production to produce their own short TV documentaries, titled “I am….”

Apply Now for 2009-10 CBA MA Bursaries

The Commonwealth Broadcasting Association is offering two bursaries to full-time staff of the CBA's member organisations from developing countries in the Commonwealth for post-graduate courses at City University and the University of Westminster in London, UK.

The MA Bursaries are in International Journalism at London’s City University and in broadcast-related subjects at Westminster University. The scholarship is tenable for one year.

The bursaries are part sponsored by the Chevening Programme of the UK's Foreign and Commonwealth Office, Westminster and City Universities, International Students House, Goodenough College and the Commonwealth Broadcasting Association. The bursaries cover fees and accommodation and give an allowance for food etc.

Please note that airfares of selected bursars are paid by the bursars' organisations or the bursar, and a guarantee to this effect is required.
